According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 40.8 km² (15.8 mi²). 40.5 km² (15.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.76%) is water.

Monroe Township is bordered by the Susquehanna River, Penn Township, Jackson Township and Union County.

Small creeks drain the township into the Susquehanna River. Flooding occurs in low lying areas on an annual basis. A few areas have persistent standing water with most rains. Ground water is being monitored by the USGS. Ground-Water-Quality Data in Pennsylvania - A Compilation of Computerized Electronic Databases, 1979-2004

Pennsylvania Routes 11&15 passes through the township. The highway is a major travel artery through the region. Flow is constant (truck and vehicle) with very heavy loads and serious backups on Fridays (especially in the afternoon) and holiday weekends. There is a proposed major highway bypass project. It is meeting with funding challenges that have delayed the project for decades. This thruway will cross Monroe Township. Many properties are designated for acquisition by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Residents along the proposed route have expressed concerns about the negative impact on their quality of life that the thruway will mean. Pro development forces have been successful in overwhelming their objections. Others are concerned that, like the town of Selinsgrove which is in decline, the bypass will mean the loss of local revenue and jobs that the traffic on highway brings to the many local restaurants and hotels along the current highway.

The Penn Central Rail Road passes through the township between Old Trail Road and the Susquehanna River.

The region's major retail commercial properties lie largely in the township. This includes the area's major mall. There are many small and medium restaurants and several car dealerships located along the highway.
