Monkton, Pembroke

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monkton is a village in Wales. The road leading west from Pembroke, Pembrokeshire leads through the romantic older village of Monkton, which has now been amalgamated with the main town. However, the area still proudly sets itself aside from the main town with its quaint older houses, narrow streets and neatly fenced gardens. Many local customs have been passed down and maintained, most noteably a yearly cheese rolling competition.

Monkton has a primary school, and there is a carefully tended though derelict priory still remaining, from which Monkton itself gets its name. The long-defunct railway station is home to the St Govan's Youth Choir.

There is one public house, the Priory Inn, famous for the friendly welcome given there to all travellers and passers-by.

To the north of Monkton are the Monkton Marshes, a well known region for observing migratory birds, especially ducks.
