[edit] Vice-Admiral Garp

Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp, nicknamed Garp the Fist, is the commanding officer of the Navy's 153rd Branch, and captain of a ship easily the size of a Buster Call warship. He is the man in charge of both Koby and Helmeppo, whom he took under his wing in Koby's mini-arc, where Garp made his first appearance. Garp was supposed to oversee the final transfer of ex-captain Axe-Hand Morgan to prison, but Morgan escaped by taking his own son hostage. Garp stopped his ship from blasting Morgan and Helmeppo out of the water, and allowed Koby and Helmeppo to stay, impressed that Helmeppo stood up to his father, and that Koby was willing to sacrifice himself for his friend. He is something of a father figure to the two of them, and helps keep their unorthodox behavior in check so that they can achieve their dreams. Garp also displays a fondness for eating doughnuts, as well as a tendency to fall asleep, and stay asleep at inappropriate moments; he even slept while being slashed by Axe-hand Morgan (this trait is also seen in Ace and Luffy, who also tend to fall asleep and stay asleep at strange times, even during the heat of fighting). His flagship is notable for possessing a dog head shaped bow and the cabins and crow's nests being shaped as dog houses.

He is the sixth character to possess the initial of D, and shows many of the characteristic traits.

[edit] Early One Piece

While unnamed Garp was introduced in Romance Dawn: version 2 (featured in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine itself) as Luffy's Grandfather, here he is a pirate captain, a complete opposite of his current occupation. Also, Luffy got both his hat and the Devil fruit he ate from his grandfather, not Shanks. According to Oda the reason for not featuring Shanks was that he wanted Shanks to be kept a secret until One Piece was serialized so he would have a greater impact. Otherwise, his appearance and temper is identical, as he quite commonly beats up his fellow pirates and Luffy with his fist. In both version, he had hoped that Luffy will also take up the occupation he is currently having, and likewise, Luffy more or less rejected the idea at the beginning.

Monkey D. Garp is a Marine Hero, who was famous for cornering the late Pirate King, Gold Roger numerous times in his career. Apparently Admiral Aokiji owes (or owed) a favor to Garp for some reason.

Luffy's grandfather was first mentioned by Aokiji, but further information was left in mystery until he appeared at Water 7 after the events of Enies Lobby. Garp is also the father of the Government's most wanted man, Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy's father, whom he somehow keeps contact with. In turn, he is also Luffy's grandfather. Early on in Luffy's life, he was trained by Garp to become a strong Marine. Luffy was thrown into valleys, left alone in dangerous forests, and tied to balloons over high altitudes, all for the sake of making him stronger. After this he left Luffy in the care of an unnamed friend. Garp blames Red-Haired Shanks's influence for ruining Luffy's promising career as a Marine. His grandfather is the only thing Luffy is shown to fear, to the point where he loses his strength and won't even stand up to him. Luffy will even become frightened at the mere mention of his grandfather.

Garp is considered by Whitebeard as one of the few people that know the seas from the time of Gold Roger.

He, Koby, and Helmeppo also make a cameo appearance in one page of Jango's miniarc.

[edit] Recent Chapters

In chapter 431 of the manga, the startling revelation was made that Garp is the grandfather of Monkey D. Luffy. This is the first time in the manga we see his entire face, which is practically identical to that of Luffy's Grandpa in Romance Dawn V.2, complete with the scar around the left eye. Garp seems to possess the same superhuman physical strength much of his family does,as shown when he busted through a rock wall. He also punched a sleeping Luffy and actually hurt him severely, to which Sanji comments it shouldn't as Luffy is made of rubber (which should reduce the force of the blow) - at which point Garp comments that "there's no way to dodge a fist of love". It is also revealed that he was the one who trained Luffy, with rather unorthodox methods (leaving him a forest at night and tying him to balloons to float into the air to name a few). Lastly, Dragon, an infamous revolutionary and the man branded as "the worst criminal in the world", is his son (and Luffy's father). Currently, he has left Water 7, stating he wouldn't arrest Luffy on account of him being his grandson. He also made sure to divert the Marines' attention by telling them Luffy ran away from the island, leaving the Strawhats to go through the rest of their stay in peace. However, on their last day on Water 7, they are about to be attacked by Admiral Garp's battleship. This is thought to be because he's taking orders. In chapter 438, it was revealed that Sengoku had ordered Garp to finish off Luffy. Aokiji is also onboard. He just met up with the Straw-Hats, telling Luffy that his voyage would come to an end. He then shows his strength by throwing cannonballs barehanded and swinging a colossal ball and chain. However, after the Straw-Hats get away with Coup de Bust, he is seen smiling, relieved they got away.

[edit] Abilities

Not much is known about his abilities, but Garp possesses monstrous physical strength. It would seem that most of his attacks involve his powerful fist, as suggested by his nickname, "Garp the Fist". This is also proven by the damage he inflicted upon Luffy, a rubber man, with his "fist of love" (Eiichiro Oda has commented that Nami can beat up Luffy because of their close relationship, so this may be the equivalent negation of powers); furthermore, cannonballs thrown by him travel incredible distances and are faster than cannonballs shot by normal cannons; Zoro commented that they were as fast as baseballs. Another attack included swinging a colossal ball and chain (as large as his own warship) with apparent ease. Garp did this despite stating that he was not as strong as he was when he was younger. He also seems to have incredible endurance, as he was slashed by Axe-hand Morgan and did not seem to be even bothered by it. While Admiral Aojiki does state that he had a difficult time with Garp, he may have meant something not related to fighting.

• Many of One Piece's characters are given distinct laughs. Vice Admiral Garp follows this tradition by starting his laughs with the "Bwa" sound (i.e Bwa ha ha ha ha!).
