From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Moldavian Democratic Republic (Romanian: Republica Democratică Moldovenească) was declared on December 16, 1917 by the National Council (Sfatul Ţării) of Bassarabia (Bessarabia) elected in September 1917 in the wake of the February Revolution in the Russian Empire.

On January 24, 1918 it declared independence. On April 9, 1918 Sfatul Ţării voted in favor of unification with Romania with 86 votes in favor, 3 against and 36 abstentions. The union was confirmed in the Treaty of Paris (1920).

Of the three people who voted against, one emigrated to the Soviet Union, one became a successful local politician, and one continued his job as a teacher.
