Mojo Jojo (voiced by Roger L. Jackson) is a fictional character in the Cartoon Network animated series The Powerpuff Girls. He is a notorious genius monkey mad scientist who lives in his lab in the middle of Townsville, USA inside an astronomy observatory tower built atop a dormant volcano. His main goal is to destroy the Powerpuff Girls, crush Townsville, and conquer the world, in that order. In order to do this, he spends much of his time plotting and inventing new weapons technology. This normally comes in the shape of giant robots or large energy weapons. He was also the creator of The Rowdyruff Boys.

[edit] Origin

Mojo was originally a lab assistant named Jojo - and a bad one, as he always broke everything. During Professor Utonium's experiment intended to create the perfect little girl, Jojo pushed him toward the mixture, causing him to accidentally add Chemical X. This lab accident created the Powerpuff Girls, and also affected Jojo, giving him a gigantic exposed brain and turning him evil.

Mojo later tried to prevent the creation of the Powerpuff Girls by going back in time (unaware that he himself would cease to exist) and destroying Professor Utonium as a child. Not only did the Powerpuff Girls foil this plot, but the incident inspired the Professor to take up science in the first place, making Mojo Jojo doubly responsible for the creation of his archrivals.

[edit] Voice

Mojo speaks English somewhat quickly, with a deep voice and a (bad) Japanese accent. He has a bad habit of repeating phrases over and over, in the style of dubbed Japanese movies and anime series. Mojo seems to be unaware of this habit. In one episode Bubbles got hit on the head with an I-beam and thought that she was Mojo Jojo, and thus spoke redundantly just as Mojo does. However, Mojo accused her of repeating phrases nonsensically (ironically repeating himself in the process).

A considered influence may also be found from Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie, in which one of the cleric made the following speech.
Cleric: And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once at the number three, being the third number be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

Compared to a famous speech from Mojo Jojo, in the Powerpuff Girls Episode 19
That's all just well enough because in reality there is only room enough in this world for one Mojo Jojo. One shall be the number of Mojo Jojos in the world, and the number of Mojo Jojos in the world shall be one. Two Mojo Jojos is too many and three is right out. So the only Mojo Jojo there is room for in the world shall be me, and being the only Mojo Jojo in the world,I will rule the world in which there is only one Mojo Jojo.

[edit] Raja Jaja

Raja Jaja is Mojo Jojo's Indian counterpart. Unlike Mojo, he looks like a human rather than a monkey, and can fire a beam from his brain dome. Raja Jaja speaks with a mixture of an Indian accent and Mojo's Japanese accent. He was defeated by mass-produced Powerpuff Girls built for the Indian market.

[edit] Trivia

  • There are 5 episodes with Mojo saving the day instead of the Powerpuff Girls, making Mojo the second largest day-saver in the series after the Girls.
  • Mojo is disliked by other monkeys, who think he gives monkeys a bad name.
  • Mojo is a great (and rather artistic) chef in Japanese cooking.
  • One of Mojo's hobbies is building ships in bottles.
  • The 2000 CD The Powerpuff Girls: Heroes and Villains on Rhino Records features a cut called "Go Monkey Go" by Devo. The corresponding music video was occasionally shown on Cartoon Network.
  • Mojo had a cameo appearance in the pilot episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
  • Mojo was reputedly inspired by Dr. Gori, the villain of the Japanese superhero show Spectreman.
  • Mojo's hat resembles the head of the Japanese superhero "The Kagestar".
  • Mojo also appeared in one of TNT's "What is Drama?" segments.
  • Mojo appears on the back cover of the band Gorillaz' B-Sides album "G-Sides". He is on the shirt of band member 2D.

Mojo Jojo also appears in the anime version of the show, where he is simply called "Mojo". Here he was not a lab assistant, and as such had nothing to do with the creation of the Powerpuff Girls. Instead he was an ordinary zoo monkey who was made fun of by people and decided to seek revenge on humanity after the light from Chemical Z made him intellegent. He is physically more powerful than the original version of the character, able to fly and lay a dozen punches at one time. However, he also acts more thoughtless and childish than the original Mojo does. While the original Mojo was portrayed as one of the most competent and genuinely threatening villains in the series, the anime version is more of a rather inept comic relief. He also does not repeat himself redundantly as the original Mojo does, instead ending most sentences with saying his name.
