In January 2005 the Mayor was Ricardo Alves Ferreira and the Vice-mayor was Adivaldo Alves dos Santos. There were 9 council-members on the city council and there were 1,904 eligible voters (2004).

In 2003 the population density was 4.24 inhab/km². The population has decreased significantly since the census of 1980 when it was 2,787. Between 1991 and 2000 the decrease was 1.19.%. In 2003 the urban population was 1,294 and the rural population was 658.

The economy was based on services, public employment, small transformation industries, cattle raising, and agriculture. In 2005 there were 3 industrial units and 20 retail units. The sector employing more workers was public administration with 153 workers in 2003. There were no financial institutions in 2005. The number of motor vehicles was: 139 automobiles, 5 trucks, 11 pickup trucks, and 62 motorcycles.

In 2004 there were 47,200 head of cows, of which 4,100 were milk cows. Swine, poultry, egg, and milk production were modest. The main agricultural products in planted area were rice, bananas, manioc, and corn. None exceeded 500 planted hectares.

In 2004 there were no hospitals and only 4 walk-in health clinics. In 2002 there were 2 doctors, 0 nurses, and 0 dentists. The infant mortality rate was 28.88 for every 1,000 live births in 2000.

In 2005 the school system had 4 schools, 20 classrooms, 24 teachers, and 426 students. There were no institutions of higher learning. The adult literacy rate was 85.7% in 2000.
