Model 204
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Model 204 is a DBMS for IBM and compatible mainframes, running under OS/390. It is more than just a database system, incorporating a programming language and an environment for application development. Its key strength is its ability to deal with very large databases (VLDB) and very high transaction loads.
Model 204 uses bit-map indexing. It automatically combines the use of bit-mapping, hashing, B-tree, and record list technologies to optimize speed and efficiency of database access.
Professor Patrick E. O'Neil wrote the B+ tree for Model 204. A B+ tree is a variation on a B-tree.
Model 204 is most commonly used in government and military applications. Among other things, it runs Australia's social security system (Centrelink). It is used commercially in the UK by Marks & Spencer.
It is a product of Computer Corporation of America (CCA).
Add-on products are available from Sirius Software.
Database Programmer's Toolkit is a freeware PC based emulation.
