Modalen is a municipality in the county of Hordaland, Norway.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Mo (Norse Mór), since the first church was built there. The name is identical with the word mór m 'heath, moor'.
The last element -dalen (the finite form of dal m 'valley, dale') was added later.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1984). It shows three spades (to represent agriculture).
