The Mochokidae are a family of catfish from Africa that are known as the squeakers and upside-down catfish. Mochokids are part of Order Siluriformes, which is part of the Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes). There are 10 genera and more than 150 species of mochokids. All the mochokids are freshwater species originating from Africa.
They have three pairs of barbels, with the nasal barbels absent. Sometimes the mandibular barbels may be branched. The lips may be modified into a sucker in some species. They range in size from 1" to 24". This groups contains many popular species among aquarists, such as Synodontis nigriventris, Synodontis angelicus and Synodontis multipunctatus.
