[edit] Clan Fraser
Hello there. Over on the Scottish clan article, you edited the Fraser origins to include Highland. You seem to have somewhat of a knowledge of these matters, and I invite you to create a User acount of your own, and join me in expanding and editing Scottish Clan articles here on Wikipedia. Now, on to the matter at hand. While many Frasers did indeed move to Inverness-shire, and form a Gaelic Clan, and adapt the Gaelic dress, language, and social structure, many Frasers also stayed in the Lowlands. The Highlanders are referred to as the Frasers of Lovat, and the primary lowland family are the Frasers of Philorth, now Saltoun. The Philorths hold Castle Fraser, in Aberdeen-shire, and other lowland Frasers come from Peebles, Stirling-shire, Angus, and some are even from Manx, though I wouldn't call them lowlanders. The Philorths, the lowland Frasers, and not from the Highlands by any stretch of the imagination, and this is why the article excludes highlang in the Fraser origins. The Fraser of Lovat origins are clearly there, however, showing Highland. Canæn 06:42, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- I do have an account. I wrote 90% of the Clan articles here. I did not write the Clan Fraser one though, although I have added little bits to it. I thought both of the Fraser clans were highland. On the Clan Fraser page there is a map showing their territory next to the Clan MacKintosh. I was sure that that was the Clan Fraser and Fraser of Lovat with their territories beside one another. That must just be the Frasers of Lovat then. The official Highland boundry does go right down to south of the Clan Campbell. Although some would prefer the 'highland' area to be those north of Loch Ness only :). You could be right though. If you look at this clan map here: http://www.burkes-peerage.net/sites/scotland/sitepages/cmindex.asp it does sow several areas of Fraser territory, the one in square C2 is indeed Lowland. mjgm84 18:33, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- I understand your confusion! There is only one Clan Fraser. In the mid-1200s, Simon Fraser was granted the Lordship of Loveth by Alexander III, and he and his immediate family moved there after a time, and Gaelicised themselves; that is, they adapted the Gaelic language, Gaelic dress, customs, and other traditions, and most importantly, the family structure of the Gaelic Clan. They interbred with others in the area, and quite a few Frasers followed Simon, and over time they grew into a fairly powerful Clan. Meanwhile, there were a very many otehr Frasers who remained in the lowlands, and remained a very respectable family. However, they never adopted the Clan system; they maintained the Scots and French languages, had a teutonic, or Norman family structure, and probably looked down on the Highlanders as inferior Irish, just like the majority of Scottish Lowlanders.
-
- However, come the romanticisation of the Clans following the Union and King George's visit to Edinburgh, the lowlanders started saying "Clan Fraser? Hey, my name's Fraser! I'm part of the Clan Fraser!" In the late 1980s, the Lady Saltoun went to the Lord Lyon, with many papers and geneological data, and pretty much proved (though there is still some confusion) that she is descended from an older brother of the man who the Frasers of Lovat descend. Thus, since the Lord Lyon makes no distinction between a Norman Scottish faily and a Gaelic Scottish Clan, he declared that she had the right to use the Fraser arms plain and undifferenced (meaning she is the senior heir to the arms), and thus is the "Chief of the name and Arms of the whole Clan Fraser."
-
- Whenever you read about the Frasers having great clan battles, and participating in the Jacobite rebellions, or wearing kilts and weilding broadswords, or any of that good stuff, you're reading about what people call the "Clan Fraser of Lovat." Canæn 03:04, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

-
- I happen to have a Highland Scottish clan name. The clan in question happens to have a relitivley good history with the Frasers. I think it must have been the Frasers of Lovat. Lord Lovat rescued our chief who had been wounded in 1452 we also took Inverness castle twice with the Frasers. By the way do you know if the Frasers fought at the Battle of Glenshiel in 1719 ? and if so under which regiment were they in ? Thanks. mjgm84 16:10, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Munro - serious errors
There are some very serious errors in the article on Robert Munro (+1633). Please see the relevant article, where I've added a caution.
1st - the entire article seems to be lifted directly from a 19th century work (quoted in the sources), 2nd - that work is a complete Victorian mess; it's full of hideous errors!
Robert Monro of Foulis, 'the black baron' (+1633) was a fairly minor figure in Germany, not a special associate of Hepburn, and didn't write the famous diary. That was the work of his cousin, the much longer-lived Robert Monro of Obstell/Obsdale (+c.1680) for whom there is already a separate Wikipedia entry, concentrating on his British career from 1639, and largely ignoring his very important career in Swedish service (largely misfiled under Robert Monro, +1633).
Another problem is that the proper name of both individuals is not Munro but Monro!
- First of all the surname I can assure you is Munro and not Monro. This Robert Munro was the chief of the clan. You can check with the current chief of the Clan Munro himself if you like on that one, his name was definatly Munro and not Monro. Monro was more of a sept name. The chiefs and the majority of the clan used Munro. The chiefs name and the clan name is often mistaken for Monro, Monroe or even Munroe. Those names were apparant but were normally septs. The chief's name and his family was always Munro.
- There is a published book available on the subject which spells his name Monro too ,this is a mistake, as is often the case when it comes to the correct spelling. I will be using the book however for future referance. You might also find a book by an Alexander MacKenzie which is called the History of the Munros of Fowlis, when it should be spelt Foulis, as another example. This book is full of beyond hideous mistakes about the history of the Clan Munro.
- The dairy did exist however and it was originaly written by Robert Munro (d.1633). However it was re-written by Robert Munro (1680) and it is fair to say that he may have made some changes. i will be using more sources to make amends on this.
- Robert Munro was particuarly succesful in Sweden. There are many other Officers even other Munro officers who he was more succesful than. mjgm84 18:55, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
With all all due respect to Chief of Clan Munro, I agree there *IS* a horrible mess in many British works on this matter. Nevertheless, the Oxford Dictionary of Biography (to which I was a contributor) in its article on Robert Monro (+1680) is mostly correct in its account of his life. There can be no doubt he, and not Baron Foulis, was the author of the famous History of Mackay's Regiment.
The writer of the diary was never a baron, nor a chief of the Munro clan. Sure the diary exists. But it was printed in 1636/37, when Robert Monro "of Obsdale" had returned to Scotland, after the last elements of the former Mackay's regiment were destroyed at the battle of Nördlingen in 1634. He took a fresh Scots regiment out to Sweden in 1637/38, but it was quickly lost. The book contains lots of details relating to the 1633-36 period, which Foulis the Black Baron - the true Baron of Clan Munro - could never have known. Also there is nothing in the book stating the Obsdale had 'completed' the diary for his cousin Foulis. Both men were far too well known in court circles for Obsdale to have stolen it. That idea is completely absurd!
I have been researching a history of the Scots in Swedish service for more than 20 years, largely from contemporary Swedish and German sources. I have also been through the diary with a fine-toothed comb. I can assure you without even the slightest shadow of doubt, that Baron Robert Monro of Foulis (+1633) was NOT the author of the diary.
Both men it is true went out from Scotland as part of Mackay's regt, and Foulis was the senior, holding the rank of LtColonel when Obsdale was still a captain. However, in 1630 Foulis parted company with the regiment and spent much of late 1630 and 1631 raising German (not Scots!) troops in North Germany. Indeed he no longer commanded Scots troops as of early 1631, though many of his officers were Scots. Foulis was advanced to Colonel and eventually raised two German regiments for Sweden - one of infantry in 1630 and one of cavalry in 1632 (the second under a patent from Duke Wilhelm of Saxe-Weimar, which still exists). I have dozens of data points tracing the passage of both regiments and their colonel Foulis through Germany. Yet the diary follows the history not of Foulis' two German regiments (which it only mentions once or twice in passing), but of the far more famous Mackay's Scottish regiment and the peregrinations and adventures of Robert Monro of Obsdale (who was still only acting colonel of the regiment in August 1632, a fact he never hides.)
I'm sorry to put it this way, but the Wikipedia entries for Robert Munro (+1633) and Robert Munro (+1680) are horribly mangled, and the former, in particular needs to be extensively rewritten.
I would do some of this myself. But not if the text is then just going to be deleted or all my additions thrown out by persons who are referring only to faulty Victorian scholarship.
If you have any data that shines a new light on the two Robert Monros/Munros, I would be more than intrigued. I have an open mind on this matter, and would really love to be proved wrong. In fact I'd find any new material very exciting! [12 November 2006]
As to the Monro/Munro spelling problem. Well I guess the Baron of Foulis (+1633) might well be more correctly spelt Munro. But Robert, the writer of the History of Mackay's regiment (+1680) spells his own name consistently as Monro and appears with this spelling in public records. It's all pretty academic really - as you know in this period spellings were not yet properly fixed. [12 November 2006, as above +5 mins]
- I have never suggested that the diary was stolen. As for the details on the events that took place I am no expert and will be doing more research in due course.
- However I do know a fair bit about the Clan Munro itself. The spelling of the surnames for both Roberts really should be Munro. The Munro spelling isn't just the chiefs way of spelling it or his immediate family. Most of the clan spelt it that way. However centuries ago peoples' spelling wasn't always that good. The same person might spell their name differently on different occasions. All the chief's sons, brothers, cousins etc are refferd to as Munro as are those who descend from them. Even the ones wo go back to the 11th century.
- I myself probably come from a chief of the 17th century. mjgm84 18:16, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- By the way you mentioned the Oxford Dictionary of Biography. Is there any infomation in that publication about James Munro (Australian politician). Like who his parents or grandparents were ? mjgm84 16:48, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
If you're talking about the following chap then yes, there's a long article about him!
It starts as follows: "Munro, James (1832–1908), politician and temperance advocate in Australia, was born on 7 January 1832 at Glen Dubh in the parish of Eddrachillis, Sutherland, the second son of Donald Munro, a tenant farmer, and his wife, Georgina, née Mackey." There's nothing more about his family origins.
Don Garden, ‘Munro, James (1832–1908)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004 accessed 16 Nov 2006
If you are in the UK contact your local library for free online access.
By the way, I've started re-writing the Munro of Foulis article, and would appreciate it, if no-one reverts to previous version. Otherwise I will just give up and leave it as is.

Actually, I was doing the move properly. We don't move pages around here by cutting from one article and pasting into the other, because the edit history is lost this way. Please read Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page. Thank you and happy editing, Misza13 15:27, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
And by the way, I have noted that you often edit without an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may think you're being sneaky. Also, mentioning one change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s). Thanks! [edit] Castles
Hi Mjgm84, thanks for adding castle articles. I think there is something missing though - where are they? Particularly Mugdock Castle - the article does not say where this is, except inthe category "Castles in highland". But the only Mugdock Castle I know of is near Milngavie. Can you clarify - this is important stuff we should include!
On another point, I saw your Covenanter rebellion template, which is another fine idea, but please note Covenanter is spelled with an e, and the rebellion occurred in 1679, not the 1770s! Thanks, Gules 10:25, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah I did notice the dates were wrong, I went back to change them but must have missed a few. mjgm84 17:54, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] GoldenEagle1.jpg
Hi! What kind of permission did you get to use this image? Is it free to be used for commercial needs as well? --Eleassar my talk 10:53, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
- Please, could you respond to my question? Otherwise I'll tag the image as {{PUI}}. --Eleassar my talk 13:35, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
-
- Permission was granted under the GNU licence. Sorry I am late in replying but I uploaded that ages ago and wasn't sure if it was one of my uploads. mjgm84 17:55, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks very much. I'm planning to use it in Slovenian Wikipedia so I wanted to be sure before uploading to Commons. --Eleassar my talk 21:45, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm sorry to be nitpicking, but there is no such thing as the "GNU" license. You probably meant the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Can you also provide proof of this permissions? If you have email permission, please forward it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and add the link to the image (commons:Image:GoldenEagle1.jpg) to it. Thank you in advance, Bryan 13:44, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wedderburn Castle
Was never the seat of the Clan Wedderburn. What is your source for this reversion? - Kittybrewster 12:49, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- I am just checking with the official Wedderburn Castle site. It appears my source may have been wrong. mjgm84 12:51, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Copyright issues
The Wikimedia Foundation has received a complaint from one of the photographs that you uploaded, claiming that the photographers had resigned all rights to it.
I see you have been warned several times in the past against uploading photographs in violation of copyright. Since you seem to disregard these warnings, I'm blocking you indefinitely. David.Monniaux 17:30, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- Which photo. Most of the above are actually Tagging problenms. All which have since been corrected. So there are no copyright issues with them anymore. Now I have learned the Wikipedia Image policy it is rare that I upload an image without the right copyright status. If so its usually an image tagging problem, which can easily be corrected. Which image are you refering to ? mjgm84 18:17, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
-
- Please do not upload photographs that you find on web sites. Is it that hard? David.Monniaux 20:48, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

-
- No problem, by the way one of the Images of Dunrobin Castle has been removed. Why ? mjgm84 11:54, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mugdock Castle
I removed a significant chunk of text from your Mugdock Castle article, as it was directly pasted from http://www.mcp.ndo.co.uk/mugdock/mugdock3.htm . This is a Copyright violation, as the website text is copyright, whether it says so or not. See Wikipedia:Copyrights for more. ::Supergolden:: 09:52, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
