Mjölby Municipality is a Swedish municipality in southeast Sweden, within the province Östergötland. Its seat is in the town of Mjölby, with ca 12,000 inhabitants.
Mjölby is located by the rivulet Svartån. The name "Mjölby" is derived from "Mölloby", which comes from mylna or mölna -- meaning "mill". Due to the rapids of Svartån and the fertile soils of the surrounding plains, Mjölby is a natural place for a mill.
The historically important town Skänninge, 3,200 inhabitants, belongs to the municipality. Other municipal towns are Mantorp, 3 243 inhabitants, and Väderstad, 650 inh.
The municipality was created with the reform of the 1970s. With 12,000 inhabitants, Mjölby is the largest of the municipal towns, much thanks to it being a major station on the southern railway line Södra Stambanan between Stockholm and the southern parts of the country.
Stable communications is provided by the motorway European route E4 that passes through the town Mjölby.
