[edit] Storm History
Hurricane Gabrielle began as a tropical wave moved off the African coast on August 28, following the wave that had become Hurricane Felix. However, the wave that became Gabrielle was farther away from Felix and was tracking westward. The wave became well-organized with moderate convection and became Tropical Depression Ten on at 1200 UTC on August 30. While Tropical Depression Ten was 1000 nautical miles apart from Tropical Storm Felix, the depression continued westward and blocking ridge soon formed, seperating Felix from Tropical Depression Ten. The storm continued to grow and strengthened into a tropical storm on August 31 based on satillite pictures from the European Meteosat. Twelve hours later, Gabrielle had grown to an unusually large and well-defined cyclone. A ship 180 nautical miles from the center of Gabrielle reported winds of 40 mph and a minimal pressure of 1008.1 mbar while a upper-air sounding from Sal reported winds of 60 mph.
Tropical Storm Gabrielle gained strength and became a hurricane on the morning of September 1, and strengthened into a major hurricane (Cat 3+) on September 3. Gabrielle was rather large, peaking as a Category 4 hurricane, peaking as a Category 4 major hurricane with winds of 135 mph. On September 4, a long trough extending from the Candian Maritimes to the Florida/Georgia border.
