Mitzvah Tanz
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mitzvah Tanz (Lit. 'Mitzvah Dance') is the Hassidic Custom of dancing before the bride on the wedding night, after the wedding feast. In many customs, the bride will hold one end of a long sash while the one dancing before her holds the other end. The custom predates Hasidism, and is mentioned first in Machzor Vitri, and has its basis in the Talmud. Some Orthodox groups oppose this practice, however most Hassidim have maintained this ancient custom.
