Mittersill

Location in Austria

Mittersill is a market town in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria, in the Pinzgau region of the Alps. It is located at 47°17′N 12°29′E, on the Salzach river, with a population of 5,584 (2001).


In 1939 in Mittersill a military school for aerial tramway construction was founded. In 1943 construction work for a goods aerial tramway across the mountain range started. To this aerial tramway belonged also 2 80 metres tall aerial tramway support pillars, one was mase of steel and the other was made of wood. Later may be the tallest aerial tramway support pillar ever built of wood. As a result of the war, this aerial tramway could not be completed any more. In the 1950ies both pillars were demolished.

It has two large industries, the Blizzard ski factory, and Fahnen Gärtner flag factory, which provide jobs for the local townspeople. It has a fair amount of tourist business as it is near many ski runs, including Kitzbühel, Zell am See/Kaprun, and Gerlosspass.

There is a Christian community which lives in Schloss Mittersill, situated above the valley, that provides training, study, and rest for Christians of all types from all over the world at any stage of life.
