Mitchell County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is named in honor of John Mitchel, Irish patriot. As of 2000, the population is 10,874. Its county seat is Osage6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,216 km² (469 mi²). 1,214 km² (469 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it (0.10%) is water.

There were 4,594 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.27% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,294 households out of which 30.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% were married couples living together, 5.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% were non-families. 27.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the county the population was spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 6.10% from 18 to 24, 24.20% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 21.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $34,843, and the median income for a family was $41,233. Males had a median income of $29,601 versus $22,054 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,809. About 7.00% of families and 10.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.50% of those under age 18 and 8.10% of those age 65 or over.
