Mitsuru, or "Mitchan" as she is most commonly called, is a fictional character from the manga and anime series entitled Fruits Basket. She is the editor for Shigure Sohma. As of yet, she has not been given an official last name.

[edit] Role in the story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

According to Natsuki Takaya, when Mitchan first met Shigure, she found him quite attractive, but now, a couple of years later, she regrets all thoughts of anything good about Shigure, "now she thinks he's evil" (Chapter 67). Mitchan is a very sad character, who is often more than simply tormented by Shigure's actions in the book world. She is often seen being tortured and worried by Shigure's constant procrastination in finishing his manuscripts and other projects and is frequently having to beg (often in tears) Shigure to finish his papers so that they will not lose both of their jobs. These episodes, however, often lead to the revealing that Shigure has actually finished his projects already, and was previously lying to Mitchan just to torture her for his own amusement.

[edit] Relationship with Ritsu Sohma

Mitchan also has a hinted romantic relationship with Ritsu Sohma. In Chapter 45 of the manga (Volume 8), Mitchan arrives at Shigure's house to pick up the author's new manuscript for publishing, only to find out that he has "mysteriously vanished" from his home once again. Arriving at the house as well, Ritsu and Tohru Honda find Mitchan crying and writing a suicide note to her mother and father stating that she can "no longer bear the harassment of a certain author". Tohru struggles to help Mitchan regain her strength but suddenly is interrupted by a smiling Shigure who states he could not finish the manuscript (assumingly) due to Ritsu's sudden arrival. Ritsu, filled with guilt, screams and cries stating that he is sorry for such things, while Mitchan screams as well but because she has no hope now that he has not finished. As their pleads for Shigure to continue his book and finish it become louder, Mitchan and Ritsu suddenly see their similarities and both blush. They later talk about the problems in their lives together, Ritsu offering great sympathy and noticing Shigure's faults for the first time, while Mitchan finally has someone that will listen to her.

According to Takaya, "there are many heartwarming episodes left between her and Ritchan, but now that the main story has progressed so far, there might not be time to draw them..." (Chapter 67) Also in the same chapter, Mitchan is dubbed officially as Ritsu's "honey", meaning most likely that their relationship is more serious than a popular fandom.

In an unpublished short comic entitled "Ai ga Areba" ("As Long As There's Love") featured near the end of the Fruits Basket fanbook, "Neko", Ritsu and Mitchan are seen, though very briefly, together on a date walking through a park-like scene in the beginning of winter. Both are quite nervous amongst one another, though with a few realizations throughout their time together, they both discover they are perfect for one another. Ritsu is more than happy to find out that Mitchan does not mind him wearing a furisode, to which Ritsu "put on without thinking" before their meeting. It is also revealed that Mitchan actually does not know Ritsu's true gender (though she assumes he is a male), but besides such things likes him for his caring, sweet personality and for who he is and represents within himself and others. As Ritsu nervously offers Mitchan a shawl for warmth in the cold temperatures, the couple is seen walking together towards a cherry blossom tree to gaze at its beauty, and possibly, each other's. The one-page story ends happily with Natsuki Takaya's words, "They seem very happy".
