[edit] Citing References

Hello Mr Manticore, I am working on the Burger King advertising article and am having some trouble citing the reference I used in garnering the data.

Here are a list of things I need help with:

  1. I watched commercials that were available on YouTube and RetroJunk; these older ads provided me with several of the older slogans and product information, but I have read that these websites should not be used as references. That the commercials exist is a fact and the information they provide is true, so how do I cite them?
  2. I used the copyright information in the commercials to date slogans, how would that be cited?
  3. Where there was a cross-promotional ad (E.G. Aladdin and BK Kids club) that included a slogan, I used the release date of the material that was being cross-promoted (from IMDb). So if Aladdin came out in 1992 and a slogan was in a commercial that was featuring the cross-promotion, the slogan is from 1992 also. That is a legitimate research technique that is used a lot of situations, I just do not know how to cite it.

All help would be greatly appreciated. Jerem43 07:48, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Military brat

A few weeks ago an article that I had just started working on was nominated for deletion. At that time, I indicated that I had just started working on it. Since you were one of the more vocal voices on this article, I tought I'd seek out your feedback on the current state of the article. Could you go and take a look at it and let me know what you think? What areas still need to be improved? What do you like/don't like? I am still working on the article and know that it needs to be copy edited, so I'm primarily looking for tone/content advice. I'll watch your page for response. [edit] Thanks !

Bummer ! When I clicked the link, I said to myself "that looks familiar". I've withdrawn the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1985-86 United States network television schedule (Saturday morning) nomination. Who's feeling silly ? Thanks again, Angus McLellan (Talk) 18:04, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey there Manticore, The military history peer review didn't like the name "Military Brat" for the article on brats, they thought that it should be changed to something more indicative of the content. They also didn't like the idea of trying to globalize it because that would 'add more bias than it eliminates.' I placed it up for FAC, and the FAC didn't like the US centricity of the article either, thus to get this passed, I changed the name to Military brat (U.S. subculture) which is what the article describes, but I'm not sure if that is the best name. Thus, I opened a discussion on the name. Is that the best name or would "U.S. Military Brat" or something else be better? I would love your input.Balloonman 22:27, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award

Unless you strongly object, I'm planning to undo the deletion you did on this article, and explain why there's only one entry. After extensive research, we've been able to locate only one ship that won the award in the "old days." It doesn't seem right to delete it just because we couldn't find more. Lou Sander 19:20, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. I don't understand why anybody wouldn't want a historical data point in an article like this, but I guess those folks are out there. Lou Sander 21:48, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About accusing me...

Care to point out where I claimed to own an article? I'd be really appreciative it if you'd be VERY specific before you start accusing me of anything. I NEVER claimed to own anything, it was merely my opinion that the consensus that existed was sufficient. If you disagree, that's fine, but DON'T go accusing me of stuff like that, if you please.--Fyre2387 (talkcontribs) 04:07, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

To be frank , you’re quite right that I’m irritated. As such, I would like to apologize if I and a few of the other project editors are a bit…abrupt, shall we say. What you need to understand, though, is that this is not about any perceived ownership, at least not on my part. (I can’t really speak for others, of course.) Its just…as a child’s show, these articles attract a lot of fairly immature editors. Not their fault, we’re all kids and some point, but its nonetheless true. To be, again, frank, if we had an RfC every time somebody decided an article needed to change, we’d never be doing anything else, and these articles would never be improved. That’s a bad thing, of course, so we’re normally just, well, bold with the reverts. I’m all for discussion (a review of my edits will show that I've asked for it on many an occasion), just so long as its not paralyzing.--Fyre2387 (talkcontribs) 04:30, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Black Bolt

I would, but he doesn't listen. Good technical editor, but no real ability to interpret what creative bells and whistles some entries need.

Asgardian 20:04, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I've tried. But this user is a tad obsessive (been banned several times over for 3RR and seems to sit in front of the computer ALL day)) and a little rude. Bring anything up, and it's all about what the other fellow has done. No matter. Why don't you take a look at the article and post your thoughts?

Asgardian 20:13, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Post yours first on the Black Bolt article, I'll see about responding. I've seen nothing of any prior interaction between you and CovenantD and I'm not getting involved. Just take some action yourself.. Mister.Manticore 20:15, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Military brat

Well, somebody beat me to the category of military brat, but I went through last night and updated all of the brats on the List of famous military brats to have the category on their page. Well, the category has already been nominated for deletion. The reasoning is because it is a "non-neutral" term and parental occupation is irrelevant. Thus, I'm letting people who have contributed to the Military brat article know so that they can support keeping the category. Here is the link to the discussion [1] Balloonman 20:26, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Avatar: The Last Airbender

As you definetly know, you have been repeatedly commenting on a personal suggestion at the Avatar: The Last Airbender talk page. As per the Wikipedia Dispute Settlement Guide, I am asking you to please withdraw your suggestion temporarily in order for others to familiarize themselves with the article and think over your suggestion. The main reason I am asking you this is so that the Wikipedians working on the article can focus more on other problems first before any other suggestions that they currently do not agree with. You can resume your argument at a later date (I suggest waiting about a week) when everybody else has calmed down and is ready to accept new ideas. This is only for the article's sake. Please withdraw your argument until a later date. Thank you! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.247.49.111 (talk) 21:36, 3 January 2007 (UTC).

To put it simply: According to WP:DR, I am asking you to complete Step 2 of the argument solving proccess. You are currently arguing about removing the character descriptions from the Avatar: The Last Airbender article and I am asking you to stop arguing for a while so users can focus on other problems as your suggestion is the only one they are concerned about. Please stop arguing and suggest your idea again after everybody has calmed down. Im sorry you could not understand my last comment, I was a little too detailed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.247.49.111 (talk) 21:36, 3 January 2007 (UTC).

Yes, I know everything. I understand (and sort of agree with) your ideas anyway. However, the dispute is never going to be solved beacuse they just keep rejecting your ideas as soon as you propose them. Until the FA Nomination is over, I am just asking you to stop arguing temporarily. If you wait for them to calm down and then re-suggest it in a different way that will not get them angry, then they might consider looking over your idea. The only reason they do not agree is because they are angry at you (for a stupid reason) and will not take any of your ideas. Just stop for a while and try again, it worked for me numerous times. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.247.49.111 (talk) !03:18, 4 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Recent Buffyverse nominations

Thank you for the advice. This has been a real learning experience. I will proceed slower and with more caution in the future.

I wanted to let you know that I did not act out of spite or bad faith in any of these nominations. I first found The White Room (Buffyverse) and nominated it for deletion. It is an article of little content better served in a larger article or deleted. I then came upon the rest of the Buffy rooms off of the Buffy template in the article. I didn't see any substantial discussion on the talk pages so I went ahead nominating them. I nominated all of these believing that they too failed to meet WP guidelines. I still think they do. But I now realize I should have gone about it in a different, more cautious way.

As far as I know there is no WP policy against fictional places. But I do know what the policy is about articles, and the standards they must live up to. I wish you the best, and hope there are no hard feelings over this. KnightLago 17:29, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Buffy compromise

I wrote a quick compromise proposal on my userspace here for posting at WP:VPR. I have not posted anything yet. Please let me know what you think, and feel free to change. KnightLago 19:22, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I was thinking of putting up the notice at WP:BUFFY directing people to my userspace to work on the proposal before putting it onto the village pump. In my opinion, the village pump is the place to put the proposal once we have it crafted, as that is where everyone hangs around. But I wasn't going to do anything without consulting WP:BUFFY. Or we could put the proposal onto Buffy? What do you think? KnightLago 19:42, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
I put the proposal here as you suggested. KnightLago 20:12, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Are you an Admin?

If you are an administrator, why don't you stop leeting people join the Avatar the Last Airbender project, and make it that only admins or people on the project can edit any avatar page? Zach111493 17:46, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Maybe you are right we should not stop letting people join the project. We should stop people with no account or had an account for less then 4 days.Zach111493 20:35, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Speaking of admin, you should try to become one, you are really involved in wikipedia and also I would tottaly nominate you and give you a positive mark. Also, can you help me become an admin. I would be better.

[edit] AFD noms

Believe me, given the similar lists out there I wanted to nominate, this last round should be considered restrained. Otto4711 02:36, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, I suppose that's why God invented AFD. Otto4711 02:41, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of taco fillings

Please note that I have added List of burrito fillings to this AFD (as suggested by one of the voters); you may wish to add a comment or reconsider your vote. Brianyoumans 23:30, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, you are correct; what I meant is that I thought some people might have additional comments or discussion to contribute given the addition of the article to the AFD. I didn't want anyone to say, "Hey, you can't delete that second item, the discussion was based only on the first item." I agree that a discussion should be more than a simple vote. As to the merge suggestion (which I made later) - I literally hadn't looked closely at the contents of the articles, the AFD tags were added by someone else, and the very concept of a "list of taco ingredients" article seemed sufficiently ridiculous that I agreed with the AFDer. However, looking at the articles themselves, they actually seem to be more general lists of items used in Mexican cuisine, including for instance a list of edible insects (which have references). It seemed to me that perhaps this was a interesting list, just badly mistitled. But, you may be right that the thing to do is to just delete these, and restart anew if someone does want a "list of Mexican ingredients" or somesuch. --Brianyoumans 00:45, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
    • Yes, I'm afraid that was sloppy work on my part, and I shall try to do better in the future. Basically I thought that the idea of a "list of taco fillings" as an article was fairly ridiculous - almost a parody of a trivial Wikipedia article - and I completed the nomination based on that. After I looked more closely, I realized that the contents were sincere, had some references, and could be usefully used elsewhere (although my opinion of the ridiculousness of a "list of taco fillings" didn't change.) --Brianyoumans 03:46, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Independent evidence for Apollo Moon landings

I noticed that you voted early on this, and wanted to let you know that the article has substantially grown (and will likely grow further) into a useful list of evidence for the Moon landings that has nothing to do with hoax sites. I'd like to invite you to take another look, and to consider changing your vote. Thanks, Gravitor 19:53, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

This is just to let you know that there is a merge proposal being considered at Independent evidence for Apollo Moon landings. [edit] RE:USMC film list

You have commented on the AFD discussion for List of films featuring United States Marines, the discussion can be viewed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of films featuring United States Marines.

Following support for my suggestion, I have done a userspace rewrite of the article at User:Saberwyn/Films featuring the United States Marine Corps, with the rewritten article in the top half and the current article with annotations as to their inclusion or non-inclusion in the rewritten list.

I would like to request that you review the rewritten article, and if you think it is appropriate, amend your stance at the AFD discussion. -- saberwyn 11:55, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

i have responded to your thoughts at the project's talk page, and agree that these articles need to be cleaned up... however i believe that our approaches may be somehwat different, regarding interpretations of WP:NOT. -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 17:44, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

yes, whether this kind of information is appropriate to the encyclopedia is definitely something to consider, especially considering its implications among a large number of articles. i have been an active member in game-related discussions and have had long discussions on AFDs when people try to write off content as cruft. But i can see that we are both definitely agreed that these articles should not remain as they are, they set a poor example and have been overlooked for much too long. Like i said on the project page, if they were reffed and the strategy was discussed in a manner like, "Mr. Foo, the author of Bar, has suggested that the most common repsonse to this opening would be X," the articles would be greatly improved. -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 18:11, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I understand

I do see where you're coming from. I have this horrible irk about stubs, I know it's not very good, but I can't shake it. I get that perhaps deletion is not the best idea, and have suggested the compromise of redirecting them to the List of Dungeons & Dragons modules for the time being and recreating when I have the information. Is that acceptable? If it is, I think we can probably end the debates now and implement the changes, because it looks like we have the consensus to do so. DoomsDay349 00:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

I'd much rather leave that as is rather than start another stub. DoomsDay349 02:17, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I'll take care of it. Probably red link it. DoomsDay349 17:29, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dick Tracy

I don't really know anything about DT. No clue about storylines or arcs. I just split that info from the list of supervillain debuts, and don't think it should be deleted because I did that. It could go where List of recurring characters in Dick Tracy#Dick Tracy Rogues Gallery .28chronologically.29 is, but that page is already too big, and would be even larger if it was done correctly. Maybe that section should be removed and replaced with a link to the debuts page. It has poor formatting because it was mixed in with other supervillains before, and now they all have the same creator and whatnot. It was also supposed to be all comic strip villains, but whoever made it only included DT stuff. I guess I'm hoping that someone who knows DT will take an interest in it someday. - Peregrine Fisher 06:15, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
