[edit] Mississippi

Regarding the suggestion posited by the writer below,

    • I think the main page should be about the river. It was there before, it got the name before and the state was named after it. Mississippi state should be under that name. 84.90.18.136 19:07, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

There is already a separate article about the Mississippi River, so it would be quite inappropriate to make *this* page about the river. On the contrary, I would recommend the "Name" section of the article should simply state the State of Mississippi was named after the Mississippi River, hyperlinking the reader to the Mississippi River article for information about the name. How the river got its name is interesting, but it really isn't relevant to how the *state* got its name, since it was simply named after the river.

As the article is currently written, a reader who did not know the Mississippi River started in Minnesota (e.g., a young child learning about the state for an elementary school geography lesson) might mistakenly believe the river starts in the state; or was named after the state; or, indeed, might think there are Ojibwe-speaking people in the State of Mississippi - which is NOT the case.

So, I would recommend the Name section read as follows:

  • Name
  • The State of Mississippi was named after the Mississippi River, which constitutes almost the entirety of its western boundary. A notable feature of the state which may have contributed to its being named for the river is the Mississippi Delta. "Delta" is a misnomer, as this large area is actually a plain that was regularly flooded by the Mississippi River, which historically put as much as a fifth of the state seasonally under water.

  • I'm not sure marijauna has been decriminalized in MS. While the penalties may be less strict, I believe there are still fines for even small time possesion.

[edit] Locked

I protected the page to slow down the vast amount of very stupid vandalism that's happened recently. The diff between 100 edits ago and now is fairly insignificant because of it. I hope someone will take on the challenge of making this article good. —Ben Brockert (42) 10:11, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Sports section added to updated Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. states format

The Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. states format has been updated to include a new Sports section, that covers collegiate sports, amateur sports, and non-team sports (such as hunting and fishing). Please feel free to add this new heading, and supply information about sports in Mississipi. Please see South_carolina#Sports_in_South_Carolina as an example. [edit] Slaves

I think this arcticle should be about the routes that slaves took on the Underground Railroad. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.180.144.177 (talk) 22:20, 19 February 2007 (UTC).
