Mistress Masham's Repose

Mistress Masham's Repose (1946) is a novel by T. H. White, that describes the adventures of a girl who discovers a group of lilliputians (From Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels). The story is set in Northamptonshire, England.

Maria - A ten year old orphan living under the watchful eye of her governess Miss Brown.

Miss Brown - Tall, skinny, strict woman, only interested in making Maria's life as awful as possible and keeping any money for herself.

The Vicar - As greedy as Miss Brown and his name Mr Hater is very fitting for his manner.

The Cook - Friendly woman who spends most of her time cooking for the household and loving Maria.

Captain - The Cook's fat collie dog.

The Professor - Kindly, poor and amiable gentleman who is charged with the task of Maria's education.

Malplaquet - The Dilapidated mansion in which Maria lives was based on Stowe School at which T. H. White taught.

The Repose - A tiny forgotten island in the middle of a lake, the home of the Lilliputians. Only accessible by boat and shrouded in brambles it provides the perfect setting for a timid and secretive civilisation. Reputed to have been where Mistress Masham once reposed,
