The original Route 4 was one of the original 1922 Missouri highways. Its eastern terminus was at Alexandria, its western terminus was at St. Joseph. From Alexandria to Stanberry, this road is now U.S. Highway 136 and from Stanberry to St. Joseph, it is now U.S. Highway 169.
