The original Missouri Route 38 is a decommissioned highway in Missouri. It was one of the highways created by the Missouri Centennial Road System in 1922. Its eastern terminus was at former Missouri State Highway 16 (now U.S. Highway 60) at Republic. Its western terminus was at Missouri State Highway 1 at Carthage, Missouri.
[edit] History
In 1932, it was decommissioned and replaced by two major roads. From Carthage to Fidelity, it became Alternate U.S. 71, a section that is currently U.S. 71. From Fidelity to Republic, the road became an extention of Missouri Route 14. In later years, this section of road would become U.S. 166 and is now Interstate 44 (to Mount Vernon).
When Interstate 44 came into existence it was routed along what was originally Missouri State 38 along the stretch from Mount Vernon to Fidelity, replacing U.S. 166 at the time. The section of U.S. 166 from Mount Vernon to Republic became Missouri Route 174.
[edit] Currently
Old Missouri 38 is now Missouri 174 from Republic to Mount Vernon, Business Loop 44 through Mt. Vernon, I-44 to Sarcoxie, Business Loop 44 through Sarcoxie (road continues west where Business Loop 44 turns north to a dead end at I-44. The road continued on the north outer road to Fidelity). At Fidelity it is currently US 71 and enters Carthage as Missouri 571. The highway ended at what is now the Missouri 96/Missouri 571 Intersection.
