Mississippi Coast Coliseum

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mississippi Coast Coliseum is a 9,150-seat multi-purpose arena in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was built in 1977. It hosted WCW Beach Blast 1993 and the Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball tournament in 1992 and 1993.

It is home to the Mississippi Sea Wolves ice hockey team. Due to damages to the arena by heavy flooding and winds, from Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, the Mississippi Sea Wolves cancelled their 2005-2006 season, at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Because repairs have not yet been completed, the Sea Wolves suspended operations again the following season, but plan to return in the fall of 2007.

It is also home to the Gulf Coast Bandits, a basketball team that plays in the WBA. The Gulf Coast Bandits cancelled their 2006 season for the same reasons as the Sea Wolves and also probably won't return in 2007.

The Mississippi Firedogs of the National Indoor Football League is another past tenant. The team folded in 2003, but there were plans for another gridiron team, the Mississippi Headhunters, to begin play in af2 in 2006 before Katrina hit. The Headhunters then moved its office to the Jackson, Mississippi, area hoping for a new arena there, but no such venue has materialized and the team is on indefinite suspension from af2. However, the Coliseum has been mentioned as home to a possible separate expansion team for the 2008 season.
