[edit] Manifesto
The Earth is our playground; our mission is to preserve it.
[edit] Ethics
The Sustainable Environment & Education Development (SEED) program is crucial for all earthly creatures. Mission Playground is passionately committed to creating awareness for eco-issues by pledging a percentage of all sales to this self-created non-profit organization. Through education, waste reduction, and recycling, it’s possible to conserve resources and sustain the environment for future generations. Mission Playground helps to raise this awareness with environmentally conscious and globally mindful designs. May we all be aware and respectful of our playground.
[edit] Awareness
How much does fashion cost? You might not know that most of the world’s clothing is manufactured from sweatshops in poorer countries, where workers earn far less than livable wages. The workers face cramped or unsanitary conditions, and are often subjected to abuse. As global awareness concerning the real price of fashion grows, many consumers as well as some clothing manufacturers are leading the push for more eco- and worker-friendly apparel. Mission Playground is on the frontlines of the clothing industry in trying to make a push towards environmentally sound products. Having a visual message on the front of a shirt is no longer enough; the shirt itself now needs to communicate the message from creation to adornment.
Here are a few things worth shedding light upon:
- Hispanic workers earn 85 cents/hour for their labor, while in Indonesia the pay is only 15 cents. Even in the United States, a worker may earn less than $5 for making a garment that will later sell for $100.
- A cotton T-shirt blended with polyester can release into the atmosphere approximately one quarter of its weight in air pollutants and 10 times its weight in carbon dioxide.
- Most conventional cotton growing relies on heavy inputs of insecticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers, many of which are known or probable carcinogens.
Here are some things that you can do:
- Get Involved! In the United States, student activists have demanded that their schools contract only with sweatshop-free producers.
- Ask for organic cotton goods at your local retailer.
- Cotton blends can be combined with materials such as hemp or Recycled fibers
- Organic cotton growing accounts for only 0.03 percent of the world's cotton, but is expanding. Although organic materials might cost a little more it is well worth the investment.
