In its 46th year, the Miss World pageant took place on the 22nd of November, 1996 in India. 88 contestants took part in the prestigious pageant. By the end of the night, Irene Skliva of Greece took home the title.

  • Preliminaries in Miss World 1996 were shot in India and in Seychelles because of the feminine protests that occur in India against the Miss World beauty pageant.
  • Bosnia & Herzegovina and Macedonia competed in Miss World for the first time.
  • Yugoslavia returned to Miss World after a 5-year civil war.
  • Macau was the last of her four siblings in the Pedruco family who competed in Miss World.
  • Dominican Republic made into the semi-finals after the year when Mariasela Alvarez won the Miss World title in 1982.
  • Bahamas and Cayman Islands did not compete in Miss World due to financial problems.
  • Belgium, who placed as semi-finalist in Miss World, failed to put herself through the semi-finals in Miss Universe 1997 in Miami.
