Miss United States
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Miss United States and Miss United States Teen pageants are beauty contests held in the United States for teenagers and young women between the ages of 15-20 (Teen) and 19-29 (Miss). The teen pageant has been held every year since 1992 and the Miss pageant since 2001.
Many delegates and winners in these pageants have either competed at or later went on to compete in other state and national pageants, particularly the Miss Teen USA and Miss USA systems. One of the most famous winners is Chelsea Cooley, who won the 2001 title after being Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2000, and later went on to become Miss North Carolina USA and Miss USA 2005. Another notable winner is Kari Ann Peniche, who was stripped of her title in 2003 after she posed nude for Playboy magazine.
Unlike many other pageants, the United States pageant has been contested among delegates of states, regions and cities. The program is particularly strong in the Carolinas, where the majority of winners have come from.
In the early years of the competition, the Teen winner was sent to competed in the Miss Teen International pageant. Two teen titleholders have later won the Miss title.

[edit] Trivia
- Miss United States was the title of the fictional pageant in the movie Miss Congeniality, although the contest depicted in that film is closer in substance to the Miss America pageant.
