[edit] Records and Trivia

  • This was the first year in the recent history of the pageant when fifteen semi-finalists were announced instead of ten or twelve.
  • The fifteen semi-finalists were cut to ten after the gown competition, the first time all semi-finalists did not compete in both swimsuit and gown.
  • For the second year there was a Miss USA Fear Factor special, in which Tara Darby of Alabama won the $50,000 prize (half of which to be donated to the charity of her choice).
  • For the first time ever, two former Miss America delegates were in the top five. They were Shandi Finnessey, who had previously held the title Miss Missouri 2002, and Stephanie Culberson who had been Miss Tennessee 2001. In her final interview, Culberson claimed she had little pageant experience, which was untrue because she had previously competed in both a local and state pageants to become Miss Tennessee, and had placed second runner-up at Miss America.
  • For the first time since 1984, the winner had previously competed at Miss America.
  • Justine Michioka, Miss Hawaii USA 2004, is the sister of Alicia Malia Michioka, Miss Hawaii USA 2003 (semi-finalist at Miss USA 2003).
  • Vanessa Bissanti became only the fourth delegate from New Hampshire to place at Miss USA.
