Miss Sweden

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miss Sweden (in Swedish: Fröken Sverige), is a Swedish beauty pageant, qualifying the winner for the global contest Miss Universe and the 1st runner-up to Miss World. It has been sponsored from 1949 until 1999 by the magazine Vecko-Revyn, from 2000 to 2004 by the television channel TV3 and from 2005 to the present by the swimwear producer Panos Emporio. The competition has also handpicked delegates to Miss International and Miss Europe.

[edit] Pageant History

The pageant has a long tradition of sending the national delegates to vacation abroad, for photos in swumsuits and evening gowns to viewers, such as Dubai (1996), Canary Islands (1997) and Barbados (2002).

In 2004 Fröken Sverige lost the Miss World franchise to Miss Sweden World Inc., conducted by Miss Norway Models Agency.

In 2005, the pageant supervisor failed to send Swedish contestants to international beauty pageants due to protests and threats from several feminist groups. This was even worse than the threats in 2002, when two feminists walked on the stage and caused chaos during a telecast of the Miss Sweden selection. The pageant also became historic when an interracial winner was picked for the first time in pageant history. Whether this had to do with the feminist protests is still a mystery, because there was no jury, just a "suggestion panel" and the telephone company claimed the next day that the broadcaster had cheated and the real winner was actually someone else.

The pageant has split into four independent contests; the strongest and also most criticised competition is Miss Sweden Universe. The franichise was bought in 2005 by Moore Magazine but was re-built by Greek swimsuit designer Panos Papadoupolous in partnership with the television network TV8.

This pageant has given the world beauties such as Lena Olin and Jessica Folcker.

In 2007 the same procedure as in 2006 will be used with a one-week boot camp for the chosen girls where they will be interviewed and also have to do oral presentations in both Swedish and English. There will be a gown competition, but no swimsuit competition.

Reigning Miss Sweden Josephine Alhanko will crown the new Miss Sweden who will represent the country in Miss Universe 2007. The final will be held on April 20, and it will be taped and broadcast on TV8 a few days later.

Miss Sweden pageant has gained american interest the tv channel ABC News have done a story on the Miss Sweden pageant on their homepage and its special way to look for contestant by job applications. They also have done a TV special for american television that can be seen on their homepage their ABC say that Miss Sweden is a better role model for young girls then Miss USA this last year Tara Conner.

The television networks through the years have been Swedish Viasat - TV4 (1992-2000), TV3 (2000-2005) and TV8 (2006-). STAR TV is broadcasting the Miss Universe pageant for Swedish viewers.

[edit] Applications for hostings

Sweden wanted to host the Miss Universe pageant twice in the early 1970s, but the wishes were never answered from the Miss Universe Organization.

Sweden did host the Miss Europe pageant 1956, and sent an application to the Miss World organization to host that contest in 1995, but the rights went to Sun City, South Africa.
