South Dakota is one of the least successful states, having only placed twice and never having advanced past the Semi-finals. One notable Miss South Dakota USA was Vanessa Shortbull (2000), one of the first Native Americans to compete at Miss USA. Shortbull was also Miss South Dakota America 2002.
The Miss South Dakota USA 2006 pageant was held in Watertown, South Dakota in November 2005.
