The competition has been carried out since 1950; in the first year it was still called Miss Reykjavík (Ungfrú Reykjavík). From 1951 to 1953, there was no competition, but in 1954, it took place under the current name Miss Iceland.

First, there are 6 regional preliminary decision in each of the 5 rural regions and in the capital Reykjavík. 20 to 24 candidates, 3 to 4 from each region, take part in the finals. Candidates from Iceland also take part in the Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Europe and Miss Scandinavia contests.
