The competition has been carried out since 1950; in the first year it was still called Miss Reykjavík (Ungfrú Reykjavík). First, there are 6 regional preliminary decision in each of the 5 rural regions and in the capital Reykjavík. 20 to 24 candidates, 3 to 4 from each region, take part in the finals. Candidates from Iceland also take part in the Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Europe and Miss Scandinavia contests.
