Mishra or Misra is an Indian surname, normally associated with the Brahmin or Bhumihar Brahmin caste. The exact origins of the name are unclear, however some say Mishra is originally taken from real word maharishi, which later diluted or fused as Mahashri and later Mishra or Misra as it happens normally happens with most surnames. Mishras have historically been deeply religious people and have a martial tradition as descendants of the warrior Parasurama.

It is one of the most widespread Brahmin surnames in the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Orissa. It is also found in countries such as Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago under the anglicised version of Misir even Britishers used to call Mishra my sir hence misir and mishra. The surname is also found in Fiji and Mauritius, as well as in other Indian diaspora communities. It is one of the most common surnames among the Brahmins or Bhumihar Brahmins in India.

Historically, Mishras have been staunch followers of their faith. The majority of Mishras reside in the fertile Gangetic Plain region of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and practice agriculture and farming, however recently as education has increased many have become professionals and have moved out of rural areas and into cities.
