Mischa Levitzki

Mischa Levitzki (May 25, 1898-January 2, 1941) was a Russian-born American concert pianist.

A native of Krementchug, Levitzki studied the piano in Warsaw with Alexander Michaelowski, making his debut at the age of eight in Antwerp. He next came to the United States, studying from 1906 until 1911 at the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, where he was a pupil of Sigismund Stojowski. He completed his piano studies in 1915 at the Berlin High School for Music, working with Ernst von Dohnanyi and receiving the Mendelssohn Prize. By this time he had performed throughout Europe and Scandinavia; he made his American debut in New York on October 17, 1916, and soon made his permanent home in the United States, later becoming an American citizen. Levitzki concertized worldwide up until the time of his death. He transcribed numerous pieces for piano, prepared a cadenza for Ludwig van Beethoven's third piano concerto, and wrote small pieces for the piano; among the latter were the Valse in A, a gavotte, and the Valse tzigane.
