Mirror Ball and Merkin Ball are two releases by Neil Young and Pearl Jam. Their recording sessions yielded both the Young-fronted Mirror Ball and the Pearl Jam-led two song E.P. Merkin Ball. The two releases complement each other both musically and in the layout and content of the album packaging. Mirror Ball received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album in 1996.

Mirror Ball was recorded in four days studio time.[1] Young wrote all of the tracks for the album, except for "Peace and Love", which was co-written by Young and Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder. Due to legal complications between their respective record companies, only Young's name appears on the album sleeve, although the individual members of Pearl Jam are credited inside.

Following the completion of Mirror Ball the members of Pearl Jam sans Vedder joined Young for an eleven-date tour of Europe to promote the album. In September of 2001, Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready joined Neil Young to perform "Long Road" from Merkin Ball at the "America: A Tribute to Heroes" benefit concert. At the 2006 Bridge School Benefit concert Pearl Jam performed "Throw Your Hatred Down" with Neil Young and went on to play the song twice by themselves during their 2006 tour of Australia.[2]
