Mirrodin (plane)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Magic: The Gathering, Mirrodin is the setting for the Mirrodin, Darksteel, and Fifth Dawn expansions.

Originally called Argentum, Mirrodin is an artificial plane created by Karn. The plane is made entirely of metal, and it has a hollow core. It has five suns, one for each color of Magic, though the green sun is only formed later. The creatures on the plane have metal integrated with flesh. This harsh world is covered with many landforms. Plains of sheets of metal cover vast areas, vegetated by razor-sharp steel "grass". The "oceans" of this world are actually liquid mercury, called quicksilver in the books. Large, twisting silver spires rise from these seas, forming islands. It is interesting to note that a creature would have to be extremely dense in order to be able to sink in the Quicksilver Sea. Metals even as dense as lead are not dense enough to sink in mercury. Residents of the islands would easily be able to walk to shore without the aid of a boat. Yet in the storyline, there is a thriving ecosystem beneath the rolling, shimmering waves. Pools of corrosive muck and clouds of corrosive gas denote the "swamp" area of Mirrodin, Mephidross. This area contains the highest concentration of lead on the plane. These toxins can destroy both the flesh and metal of a resident or animal. The Oxidda Chain would be a sight to behold. These rugged mountains are a perfect example of magnetics gone haywire; stones, boulders, and even mountiantops hang suspended from the rusty, iron slopes. Lastly, the Tangle, named such because of its disorienting array of copper tubing and piping in the place of trees and vines. The verdigris formed by oxidized copper is very appropriate to simulate green leaves and plants in this forest.

In the story, Memnarch, the warden of the plane, which was once the Mirari from Odyssey and Onslaught given life by the golem Karn, gradually grows insane, causing the near extinction of the blinkmoths, as well as other plot elements. Glissa, an elf, is the main protagonist in this storyline.

[edit] The Tangle

The Tangle is the name of the forest on Mirrodin. Instead of normal trees, the Tangle consists of twisted copper trees. Residents of the Tangle include the Viridian elves, the Trolls, the Sylvok druids, and many beasts, such as Slagwurms and Vorracs. Tel-Jilad, the "temple" of the ancient trolls lies deep within this thicket. These trolls are the keepers of the secret of Mirrodin (Mirrodin is hollow, ruled from within by Memnarch. The surface inhabitants don't know this).

[edit] Mephidross

The Mephidross is a vile pit of sludge on Mirrodin. The Nim, mindless zombies endlessly roam the area. It is said that the necrogen mists here turn people into Nim. Geth, the powerful ruler of the Moriok, controls Nim from Ish Sah, the Vault of Whispers, and has several meetings with Glissa the elf there.

[edit] Razor Fields

The Razor Fields are a place where razor-sharp 'grass' grows. It is home to Taj-Nar, the city of the Leonin. It is also where the Loxodon and Auriok live.

[edit] Oxidda Chain

The Oxidda Chain is a metal mountain region, home to the goblins, ogres, and vulshok barbarians. The main structure of this region is Kuldotha, a furnace which produces molten metal and is also used as a temple by the local goblins.

[edit] Lumengrid

Lumengrid is home of the Vedalken and the Neurok people, and it lies upon the Quicksilver Sea. The Knowledge pool is there, which is filled with serum. Serum, also called lymph, is a magical liquid which increases a person's intellect, but corrodes away the metal all mirrodin citizens possess into flesh. This serum is extracted from creatures known as blinkmoths.
