Miroslav Benka, writer, director, actor and a designer, was born in Asanja in Vojvodina, Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia) on April 22, 1956. He graduated from the College of Applied Arts in design and from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, Acting Department. He also graduated from the Faculty of Drama Arts at the University of Arts in Belgrade, Directing Department. Benka is guest professor at the Faculty of Drama Arts in Bratislava, as well as a director and artistic director of the City Drama Theatre in Zilina in the Slovak Republic and Managing director and Artistic director of the National Theatre Sterija in Vrsac and Managing director and Artistic director of Vrsac Autumn Theatre Festival.
Benka directed as many as 50 theatrical performances of classical and contemporary playwrights in Yugoslavia and abroad. He is also a director of documentaries films and advertisements, TV shows, music clips, radio dramas and multimedia - ambience projects. He will be remembered for the project Lux in Tenebris ("Light into Darkness") made in Bojnice Castle in the Slovak Republic. He did significant work in the Theatre of Movement ( S.O.S. ( Save Our Souls ), Soft Dreams, Panem et Circenses ("Bread and Plays"). In almost all of his performances he is the author of total design. He exhibited at the International Stage Design Exhibition of Quadriennale in Prague. Other exhibitions include: Ours in Prague - gallery Progres, Belgrade, YUSTAT - Biennale of Stage Design, Museum of Crafts and Arts, Belgrade and Triennale of Theatre Set and Costume Design, Novi Sad.
With his performances he successfully participated in Belgrade’s BITEF, in Sarajevo’s MES, in Ljubljana’s EX PONTO, in Novi Sad Sterija s Theatre Festival, Yugoslav Theatre Festival in Užice, as well as Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Norway, Finland, Iran. He is the winner of many international prizes: State Prize for directing of author's performance SOFT DREAMS - Union Dramatic Arts of Slovakia, Bratislava 1994 and Grand Prix for author's performance in Panem et Circenses ("Bread and Plays") - 24th International Theatre Festival Fadjr 2006 - Teheran, Iran.
