Miriam DeCosta-Willis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Author and college professor Miriam DeCosta-Willis was born November 1, 1934, in Florence, Alabama. The daughter of a college professor and a school administrator, she was the eldest of two children.

The family relocated to Pennsylvania in 1936 so her father could earn his Ph.D. and DeCosta-Willis went to the Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut for high school. While there, she boycotted the school in eleventh grade for what she described as "Uncle Tom leadership". She was the only student without a roommate, unsurprisingly.

She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts and earned her B.A. in 1956. She later went on to earn an M.A. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1967 from Johns Hopkins University.
