Miriam Byrne

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Very Rev. Miriam Byrne is a controversial priest of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

A former Roman Catholic nun, she eventually became provost of St Paul’s Cathedral, Dundee, in the Diocese of Brechin, and thus the most senior woman in the SEC. She was suspended in 2000 over her liturgical decisions and administrative style but reinstated after the intervention of Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

In April 2006, she announced that she would step down as rector of the Cathedral after allegations emerged that she had exceeded her allowance for renovating the Cathedral rectory, although a Church hearing ruled that she could remain provost.
