Mirely López

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mirely López (born 2003) is a Guatemalan girl who became famous all over her native country when she was the lone survivor of a massacre that occurred on December 5, 2004.

López survived for an undetermined number of days by herself, alongside the corpses of her mother and three other persons. Police found her after neighbors called about rotten smells coming from the apartment. She was taken to a hospital and examined. Dr. Mario Merglar found her to be in good condition, and speculated that she survived by drinking liquids, such as water and milk.

Immediately after she was rescued, news about her survival crossed Guatemala. She was placed in a children's department program where she received psychological help. According to the psychologist assigned to her case, Dr. Antonieta de Corbon, López received over 175 hospital visits from strangers, as well as more than 300 presents from people around the country. López was held under strong police protection at the hospital where she stayed, out of fear that the attacker(s) who killed the four people in her apartment might try to attack her.
