[edit] History
The History of Miranda! began in 2001, when Alejandro Sergi decided to join Juliana Gattas, Lolo Fuentes and Bruno de Vicenti to start a band. Their style would be catalogued by themselves as Melodramatic Electropop.
The band was named after Argentinian classic actor Osvaldo Miranda. Since the band began playing, they wanted to meet him. This finally took place during the Buen Dia Arriba festival, in December 2002, in a bar near a park at Palermo Viejo.
Their popularity grew around the Buenos Aires Underground music circuit, based on their peculiar music, style, and looks. Their unique live performances, in which the band members "acted out" the lyrics of their songs, gained them a great amount of followers, as well as a number of prizes on such publications as the Argentinian version of the Rolling Stone Magazine, which named them the Revelation Band of 2002.
The same year, they released their first album, Es Mentira, which would spawn five singles: Bailarina, Imán, Tu Juego, Agua and Romix.
In 2004 Miranda! edited their second album, entitled Sin Restricciones, which would mean the mainstream breakthrough of the band, with hits like Yo Te Diré or Don, which would go on to be one of the most downloaded ringtones in the world by 2005. Other singles out of this album were Navidad, El Profe, Uno los Dos and recently Traición.
They've just released their third album, containing three new songs that were formerly the soundtrack of very successful soap operas from Argentina, "Quereme...tengo frío" ("Love me, I'm cold") from Piel Naranja (Orange Skin), starring Arnaldo André and Marilina Ross in 1975; "Una lágrima sobre el teléfono" ("A tear over the telephone") from Una voz en el teléfono ("A voice over the phone"), starring Carolina Papaleo and Raúl Taibo in 1990; and "Esa extraña dama" ("That strange lady") from the soap opera with the same name, starring Luisa Kuliok and Jorge Martínez. This songs were performed at the 2006 Martín Fierro Awards TV Show, and then released as a single cd in Argentina.
Recently, they released "Traición", the sixth and final single from "Sin Restricciones".
[edit] Lyrics controversy
There is a big controversy regarding the sexual content in some of their songs, mostly in El Profe ("The Teacher" in English) which talks about a male student fantasizing about being one of his female classmates' love teacher. The language used and the situations described are unusual for mainstream pop and some might find them offensive and of bad taste. The passages that better illustrate this controversy would be: "Quisiera que me mientas cuando pregunte tu edad" (I want you to lie to me when I ask your age) and also "Quiero que te toques para mi, quiero tocarme y acabar en ti" (I want you to touch yourself for me, I want to touch myself and come inside/on you).
