Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman

Mir Shakil ur Rahman is the Group Chief Executive and Group Editor in Chief of Jang Group of Companies of Pakistan. This media group publishes a number of Newspapers and Magazines in Urdu and English. Currently, his eldest son Ibrahim Rahman is helping with Geo TV.

Business Week magazine, in a special report published in the issue of 11 July, 2005, selected Mir Shakil ur Rahman in 25 Stars of Asia, for their role in bringing change in their respective field in Asia. They wrote that Geo TV launched by Mir Shakil ur Rahman has become one of the most popular TV channels in Pakistan.
The Jang Group of Publications was founded by Mir Khalil ur Rehman, father of Mir Shakil ur Rehman. This media group though popular heavily tilts towards right. JG has often collobaorated with sitting governments to benefit from advertisement revenues. It has often been blamed for sensationalism, and yellow journalism. Some of the ethnic violence happening in Sindh province of Pakistan has been attributed to JG, which equated acceptance of Sindhi as official language of the province with murder of Urdu. Language riots in 1970s in Sindh were the result of such sensational journalism.

Mir Shakil ur Rahman is currently president of All Pakistan Newspapers Society. He has also remained President of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors in 1995-96 and 2003-04. Mir Shakil ur Rahman is also currently president of Pakistan Broadcasters Association.
