[edit] Gascon
Are your sure that "Miquelon" is Basque. -on is, I recall, a diminutive suffix in Gascon language as in Peyruton, "Pete"? French Basque Country was multilingual in Basque, Gascon and French. But, probably the names were cross-language.

- There were never any Gascon fishermen in Miquelon.
- The island was a Basque fishing station during the XVIIth century with many fishermen who's first name was "Miquelon" or Michael in basque (Labourdin)
