The Canadian and Australian Mintos are all named after Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 4th Earl of Minto, a popular British peer who served as Governor-General of Canada and also as Viceroy of India. The Earls of Minto are in turn named after Minto in Scotland. It is not known whether the U.S. Mintos are named after the Scottish one or after one of the Earls.
