In its history, the popular BBC drama Holby City has had characters who make only limited appearances either for a specific storyline or to bring entertainment to the show.

[edit] Robbie Wearing

  • Played by: Marvin Humes
  • First appearance: 3x2
  • Last appearance: 5x30

Robbie was the teenage son of midwife Steve Wearing. When Robbie’s mother and Steve’s wife died while Steve was out with a colleague, Robbie held him responsible for her death. He gradually became more of a teenage tearaway, culminating with his carjacking the car of midwife Ben Saunders. Ben and Steve gave chase, and a car crash ensued. Ben was killed in the aftermath, and Steve’s leg was amputated. He died from his injuries shortly afterwards, leaving Robbie an orphan.

Paul Rose is the longest serving minor character in Holby City to date. He works in the hospital as an anaesthetist, and was originally wheelchair bound. His recovery mirrors that of the actor, Andrew Lewis, who regained the use of his legs after several years of physiotherapy.

Simon was the abusive husband of long-serving character Kath Shaughnessy. His motives for beating her seemed to be caused by unemployment and alcoholism. He was beaten up by his son Danny after the latter found out how his father had been treating his mother. Eventually Kath divorced him and remarried.

Leo Griffin is the son of Ric Giffin, and step-brother of Jess Griffin. He and Ric became estranged after a series of disagreements. He had a natural animosity with Jess, however she and Zubin Kahn came to his aid when his heroin addicted girlfriend went into premature labour. The baby died, and was subsequently kept secret from Ric for several months.

Terry Fox was the father of Matron Lisa Fox, and became involved with staff member Kath Shaughnessy. The pair married after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After Terry died, Lisa became suspect of Kath’s role in her father’s death and had his body exhumed. It was revealed Terry’s death was not natural, and Kath was put on trial for his murder. Although she was found not guilty, Kath and Lisa were not reconciled until Kath Holby to start a new life.

Marty Campbell-Gore was the brother of the eminent surgeon Mr. Campbell-Gore. Marty was a criminal who owed gangsters money

Loftwood was a Cardio-Thoracic Consultant and also Clinical Lead at Holby City Hospital. He encouraged Alex Adams to return to Holby on a more permanent basis, and also had Lab Technician Reg Lund on his firm while Reg was still performing surgeries. He was quietly opposed to Connie Beauchamp’s expansion of Darwin Ward, however still recommended that she apply for his Clinical Lead title upon his retirement.

Sean was a love interest of Nurse Jess Griffin. He initially thought he was the father of her baby, but even after she revealed the child was Anaesthetist Zubin Khan’s, he continued to support her. After Jess left him for Zubin, he transferred quietly to neighbouring hospital St. James’.

Dominic Fryer was a university professor of Diane Lloyd, with whom she had a brief relationship. Diane revealed that upon terminating their relationship, she was raped by Dominic. They were reunited at a seminar in London which Diane attended in the place of Connie Beauchamp. Dominic offered to help Diane further her career, but she declined. Dominic later accepted a teaching position at Holby City Hospital, where he was attacked by another student he had raped. He discovered he had a hernia, and was operated on by Diane and Ric Griffin. He and Diane argued during the procedure, and he began to fit. He subsequently died, almost destroying the career of anaesthetist Zubin Kahn in the process as a result of his being blamed for negligence during the surgery.

Jodie was the first girlfriend of Midwife Mickie Hendrie. She suffered from respiratory problems as a result of a botched lung operation, performed several years previously by Cardio-Thoracic registrar Will Curtis-Harding. Seeking revenge, Jodie crashed a car into Will in the hospital car park, resulting in his being impaled on scaffolding. He subsequently died, and Mickie turned Jodie over to the Holby police.

Dr. Greene is a Consultant Anaesthetist who is constantly maligned for his poor sense of humour and irritable temper. He stood in for Zubin Kahn while he was under investigation for the death of Dominic Fryer, and interviewed Diane Lloyd as part of her consultant’s exams. Most recently, he was mocked by Cardio-Thoracic registrars Sam Strachen and Joseph Byrne prior to a staff football math - in which the anaesthetist team won a resounding victory.

Frank Williams was the father of Nurse Mark Williams. He and Mark were estranged for a number of years, and were reunited by Matron Chrissie Williams. Frank suffered from an aneurism and subsequently died after being exposed to MRSA. It was revealed that Frank had raped Mark’s wife Tricia Williams, and a paternity test proved that he, not Mark, was Chrissie’s biological father.

[edit] Lord Charles Byrne

Lord Charles Byrne is the father of Cardio-Thoracic registrar Joseph Byrne. He works at neighbouring Holby hospital St Luke’s, and holds positions of power within the local medical sphere. He manipulated Connie Beauchamp to secure Joseph’s position at Holby City, and has been seen to push his son to great lengths. His younger son, Harry Byrne is currently in a comatose state following an attempted suicide attempt. His relationship with Joseph is awkward, and has been even more so since Joseph’s own overdose. He has recently been seen to encourage the developing relationship between Joseph and General Surgical registrar Jac Naylor.

Max is the twelve year old son of Acting Sister Kyla Tyson and Harvey Tyson. Due to childcare issues, he is frequently forced to spent time at Holby City Hospital while his mother is working. His parents separation and subsequent poor relationship saw Max become involved in the bullying of another child at school. Max suffers from diabetes, and has been admitted to Holby as a patient twice - once after falling into a hypoglycemic coma having been given alcohol by his mother’s current boyfriend, Justin Fuller, and more recently after contracting food poisoning from pizza on Keller Ward.

The wife of Cardio-Thoracic Consultant Elliot Hope, and mother of James and Martha Hope, Gina suffered from Motor Neurone Disease. As her condition deteriorated, she became increasingly bleak in her outlook - at one point having a DNR put on her records, which Elliot directly defied. When she collapsed at home, he enlisted Martha and registrar Joseph Byrne to aid him in fitting Gina with a tracheotomy against her express wishes. Although Gina thanked him for saving her, she soon returned to losing the will to continue. She refused experimental treatment in Singapore, and after befriending Connie Beauchamp, went away to Switzerland to commit assisted suicide. She changed her mind about not telling Elliot at the last minute, and he flew to Switzerland to join her as she ended her life.

[edit] Christopher Sutherland

Sutherland holds a managerial position at Holby City. He offered a position to Abra Durant, and almost immediately revoked it when Abra proved incompliant with the will of the board. He was instrumental in Abra’s departure - hiring Peter Clifford to uncover the corruption he suspected within the General Surgical department. He also convinced Connie Beauchamp not to leave Holby for Sweden by securing extra funding for the Cardio-Thoracic department.

[edit] Harvey Tyson

Harvey is the ex-husband of Acting Sister Kyla Tyson and father of Max Tyson. He works as a police officer in Holby. His relationship with Kyla is constantly strained, marred by conflicts over childcare and access rights. Although currently they are attempting to rebuild their relationship, Harvey has recently displayed a violent temper, attacking both an elderly patient, and Kyla.

Sanghita Parma is a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Holby City Hospital Psychiatric Unit. She mentored junior doctor Matt Parker, and also offered counselling to Elliot and James Hope following the suicide of Gina Hope.

Nikki is a psychiatric patient with a history of self harm. She began a relationship with junior doctor Matt Parker, which he attempted to break off on several occasions, alarmed by the extent of her neediness. She proved resistant to terminating their relationship, and it was only when they were discovered by Lola Griffin that they appeared to have separated for good. However, when her father was admitted to Holby City Hospital, they were recently reunited.

Jade McGuire was a fourteen year old prostitute who played on the concern of Cardio-Thoracic registrar Sam Strachan. She brought about the termination of his budding relationship with Matron Chrissie Williams by implying she and Sam had had sexual relations. Rather than see her be taken into care, Sam went as far as to seek his mother’s help in caring for Jade, but realising she was potentially damaging his career, Jade disappeared from hospital.
