Minomutchi (ミノムッチ? Minomutchi in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Minomutchi is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Minomutchi in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2] Its name is a pun on the Japanese word for bagworm (蓑虫 minomushi?).

Biological characteristics

Minomutchi are based on the larval stage of the bagworm. Much like real-life bagworms, Minomutchi seek out suitable objects to create a sort of raincoat or casing to protect themselves from the elements. They attach various objects, such as stones, leaves, and even building insulation around the circumference of their bodies to make the protective coat. After battle, the coat of a Minomutchi is usually ruined, forcing them to once again search out objects to create a coat. Minomutchi is unique in the sense that, much like the bagworm, it displays a very obvious form of sexual dimorphism upon evolution; if female, a Minomutchi will evolve into Minomadam, while male Minomutchi evolve into Garmeil.

Minomutchi's coat differs from other Minomutchi depending on the location where it was born or fainted during a battle. When the Pokémon faints the coat falls apart and the Minomutchi's soft, vulnerable body is revealed. The main color of its body is a very dark greyish-green. Its head is quite large when compared to the body. It has a sort of growth atop its head that looks like four stones stacked on one another. The body of a Minomutchi is segmented and it has six small legs (compare to Wurmple's) which they use to hold onto the material used to create the coat. The last two legs are yellow, while the other four legs are the same color as the rest of their bodies. Minomutchi's mouthparts are also extendable and are used to pierce leaves and draw them closer to themselves.

The leafy coat of a Minomutchi consists of a mass of leaves and grass clumped together, with two sticks jutting out from the bottom of the coat in order to give the Minomutchi a means of support when not hanging from a tree. The leaves are strewn mainly upon the uppermost area of the coat, while the grass is clumped onto the underside of the coat. Minomutchi acquire this coat when living in and after fainting in a forest or anywhere outside of a building or cave.

A Minomutchi's sandy coat is composed of clumps of sand slathered onto the Pokémon's body and rounded out to conform to a Minomutchi's body. They also adorn the coat with rocks and stones of varying sizes. Unlike the other coats, this coat does not provide much means of support for a Minomutchi. This coat can be acquired by a Minomutchi when they faint in a cave or another sandy or rocky area, but not in a building, nor grassy area.

A Minomutchi will also appear with a pink, fluffy coat consisting of fiberglass building insulation, with two pieces of wire jutting out from the front of the coat to provide a means of support for a Minomutchi. The bottom of the coat has three little tufts that resemble a little tail. It also has whisker-like lines coming down from the facial area of the coat. As is to be expected, Minomutchi can only acquire this coat if they faint inside of a building, and will not get it if they faint elswhere.

In the video games

Minomutchi is notable for the three forms it may take. It changes form depending on where it last battled; the form is determined by whether it is in a building, in a cave, or in grassy areas. When battling in grass, Minomutchi takes on the leaf-cloaked form. In a cave, it changes to the sand-cloaked form. When in a building, it becomes the pink, insulation-cloaked form. It will always keep its original Bug-type, regardless of its form; when it evolves, however, it will take on a second type depending on its gender and, if female, its current form.
