From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Minneapolis College of Art and Design is a four-year and post-graduate college specializing in the visual arts. Founded in 1886, the College was originally called the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts and the first class contained 28 students, 26 of which were women.
The curriculum was later revised, requiring both fine arts and design students to take classes in areas such as figure drawing, still life, design, sculpture, typography and art history.
Currently, the Bachelor of Fine Arts program offers majors in Advertising Design, Animation, Comic Art, Drawing, Filmmaking, Studio Fine Arts, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. A Bachelor of Science: Visualization major is also offered, and focuses on business-related topics. An average of 700 students attend the college, with approximately half enrolled in design and the rest in fine arts and media arts.
MCAD offers certificate programs for students who wish to concentrate in an area but are not seeking a degree. Currently, the College has two certificate programs: post-baccalaureate certificate and a certificate in sustainable design online.
The post-baccalaureate program is a focused, intensive course of study for those who have completed a significant amount of work in studio art or design. Such students can use a post-baccalaureate certificate to qualify for certain occupations or to strengthen their portfolio if they are considering pursuing graduate studies. Applications are open to individuals who have received a bachelor’s degree.
MCAD's ground breaking Online Sustainable Design Certificate program offers a great way to gain in-depth, actionable knowledge. MCAD Online too, is not just for designers and creative service buyers. Projects and learning tracks are geared to build better business and living environments, fostering innovation and new ways of thinking. In addition to design professionals -- educators, government officials, business people, and students of all backgrounds, gain real and actionable knowledge.
