Seal of the Department of Defence
The Minister for Defence is the senior minister at the Department of Defence (Irish: An Roinn Cosanta) in the Irish Government. The current Minister for Defence is Willie O'Dea, TD; he is assisted by Minister of State Tom Kitt, TD. The department is responsible for the Irish Defence Forces; its primary concern is that of ensuring a secure and stable environment for the economic growth and development of the country.
The Ministers and Secretaries Act, 1924 assigned the minister the additional title of Commander-in-Chief as the Chairman of the Council of Defence. The Defense Act, 1954 removed this title as a result of the reconstitution of the Council of Defense.
