[edit] Personality is Priority

Ming-Dao's philosophy is to educate students to learn how to "learn and think". The aim is to cultivate future global citizens with proper attitudes, open minds and outstanding academic abilities. To cultivate future citizens with outstanding, professional and humanitarian abilities, uniting teachers’ devotion and administrative support, Ming-Dao has achieved “School of Humanity” taking happy learning, healthy growing, amplitude in education and holistic development. It is to teach the students that "their personalities are as important as their brains." This philosophy contributes to the birth of a “Holistic Education," which is to teach our students to seek a better quality of life; to help others; to look on the bright side of life; to be willing to love and share, and to understand the meaning of dedication. To achieve the goals of a “Holistic Education," for example, the Boy Scouts of Ming-Dao provide a program to develop effective character, citizenship, and personal fitness training for youth. Specifically, the Boy Scouts make every endeavor to develop our students to have a keen respect for the basic rights of all people and to be prepared to participate in and give leadership to our society.

[edit] Global Citizen Program

At Ming Dao, personal, interpersonal, and citizenship development has always been an integral element of our program. However, in a world that becomes ever more interdependent economically, socially, and environmentally, global rather than national citizenship is becoming more imperative.

Our mission for the Global Citizen Program is to unite in our purpose to inspire and prepare learners for life in our changing world. Furthermore, we strive to prepare students for higher education in the finest universities around the world. Finally, it is to cultivate students’ ability to communicate on the international stage and take leadership roles in shaping the future of our world.

In addition, in times of certain change, students need to adapt to societal and technological changes, while still grounded in values that are eternal. These values include compassion, honesty, diligence, and respect for self, others, and property. At Ming-Dao, we strive to cultivate in learners moral and performance excellence and the attributes of responsible, caring, and contributing citizens.

For thirty-seven years Ming-Dao has been renowned for delivering the highest standards of education through outstanding teachers, committed support staff, and excellent resources. Students enrolling in our Global Citizen Program can be certain of benefiting from this tradition of excellence while embarking on their journey to a wider world than those before them. While our students will be global citizens, in terms of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes outlined before, they will still be highly competitive in more conventional subject areas such as Math, Science, Chinese, and of course English.

Why promote Global Citizenship? If one asked himself, “What education is for?” What would your answer be? Many of us would say that its purpose is to develop well-rounded children, to enable children to get on well with others, to be curious about the world, and to have a positive self-image. With these attributes, children will undoubtedly have a secure and successful future. However, it is easy to forget the importance of these things if there is an over-emphasis on passing examinations and competition with other students and classes. Clearly, it is essential that children reach their own potential, but co-operation is a more useful life skill than competition in developing Global Citizens.

Young people are our future, but they are also our present. They are interested and concerned about what is happening in the world, and in their lifetimes could make a difference to the inherited problems they face. However, we cannot leave it to our children to sort out all the difficulties.

As adults - teachers and educators - we can take the responsibility to begin the process of change. We can provide an education that will furnish children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to see that the issues of the world are issues for them. Such an education is exciting and relevant for young people. It is important not to lose sight of this in the face of overwhelming demands on the curriculum.
