Minehead Cricket Club

Minehead Cricket Club was formed in 1865 and has been a member of the Somerset League, UK since the League's inception in 1973. The club achieved a Club Mark in June 2005 and has been selected as one of Somerset's representatives in the "Chance to Shine" programme.

In 2005, both the 1st and 2nd XI's won their respective championships in the Somerset League and as a result the club was named as Somerset League "Club of the year". In the 2006 season, the 1st XI will play in the Somerset division of the WEPL, the 2nd XI in the 1st division of the Somerset League, and the 3rd XI in the 4th division of the West Somerset League.

The club has 3 league teams:

  • Minehead 1 XI, captained by A Dyer
  • Minehead 2 XI, captained by I Bowditch
  • Minehead 3 XI, or A's captained by K Sharpe
  • The club has also received a Women's team from Roadwater CC.
  • The club has two non-league teams, the mid-week side, captained by B Swann, that normally plays touring sides from across the UK, and Minehead 4 XI. Minehead 4 XI, captained by K Welsher, normally plays friendly matches against local sides. This team was set up to allow youngsters into games with the main club.

The teams making up the club receive training from coaches in the Somerset County Cricket Club in the West Somerset Sports and Leisure Centre.

In 1996, K Welsher (ECB Qualified Coach) set up coaching sessions for youngsters during the week, and by 2006 there were more than 200 children attending. Other coaches include D Leatherby, D Cotterill and S Tudball.

The young teams produced by these coaching nights are ranked amongst the top 5 in West Somerset.

  • In 2004-5, the Under 15's came joint 1st both years.
  • In 2004-5, the Under 13's came in the top 5 each year.
