I'm trying out a semi-automated system of finding likely promotions based on average monthly growth factors (for example, this English Wikipedia has grown about 6% per month for the last three months). The list below is based on very unsophisticated (for the moment) spreadsheet calculations. Let's see how this goes, shall we?

Based on the numbers at Wikipedia:Multilingual monthly statistics, the following languages might need promoting in the table during this month (January 2005):

  • Chuvash (cv:) will probably reach 2,000
  • Slovak (sk:) will probably reach 20,000 Happened Jan 1st. - dcljr
  • Tamil (ta:) might reach 2,000
  • Vietnamese (vi:) might reach 5,000 Happened Jan 28th. - dcljr

These are less likely but possible promotions:

  • Icelandic (is:) might reach 10,000
  • Neapolitan (nap:) might reach 5,000

And the following languages are the most likely newcomers to the table:

  • Ilocano (ilo:) might reach 1,000
  • Kapampangan (pam:) might reach 1,000
  • Waray-Waray (war:) might reach 1,000

- dcljr (talk) 08:33, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... so far three wikis have reached new milestones without being listed above (see the history). Although I don't think I would have caught two of them using my "old way" (just looking at the numbers). Portuguese, though... I think I might have listed that one... - dcljr (talk) 21:19, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Again this month (February 2006) I'm trying a more "automated" system of predicting languages that need promoting based on spreadsheet calculations (growth rates, etc.) using the data at Wikipedia:Multilingual monthly statistics.

Here are the most likely promotions this month:

  • Chuvash (cv:) will likely reach 2,000
  • Tamil (ta:) will reach 2,000 Happened Feb 5th (according to Meta). - dcljr
  • Persian (fa:) will likely reach 10,000 Happened Feb 18th or 19th. - dcljr
  • Korean (ko:) will reach 20,000 Happened Feb 12th. - dcljr
  • Finnish (fi:) will reach 50,000 Happened Feb 20th. - dcljr
  • Norwegian/Bokmål (no:) will reach 50,000 Happened Feb 6th. - dcljr
  • English (en:) will probably reach 1,000,000 Close! Happened Mar 1st. - dcljr

Less likely, but possible, promotions include:

  • Faeroese (fo:) might reach 2,000
  • Neapolitan (nap:) might reach 5,000
  • Icelandic (is:) might reach 10,000

And the most likely newcomers to the table:

  • Waray-Waray (war:) will probably reach 1,000 Happened Feb 21st. - dcljr
  • Cashubian (csb:) might reach 1,000
  • Ilocano (ilo:) might reach 1,000
  • Yiddish (yi:) might reach 1,000

Languages watched in April 2006

This section was moved from the #Languages in need of watching section above. - dcljr (talk) 00:36, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I'm back. According to my calculations, the following languages may need promoting in the table by the end of this month, April 2006:

  • Japanese (ja:) will reach 200,000 Happened on Apr 9th. - dcljr
  • Latin (la:) will reach 5,000 Happened May 6th. - dcljr
  • Limburgish (li:) will reach 2,000
  • Occitan (oc:) will reach 2,000 Happened on Apr ?-Edroeh not knowing on which day it happened I noted an ?. (Oops, that was an oversight on my part: it actually happened on Apr 5th according to Meta. - dcljr)

The following are less likely, but possible, promotions:

  • Esperanto (eo:) might reach 50,000
  • Icelandic (is:) might reach 10,000 Happened May 6th. - dcljr
  • Sicilian (scn:) might reach 5,000
  • Neapolitan (nap:) might reach 5,000
  • Alemannic (als:) might reach 2,000

And the following are the most likely newcomers to the table:

  • Cornish (kw:) will reach 1,000 Happened on Apr 8th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Kapampangan (pam:) will probably reach 1,000 Happened May 5th, according to Meta. - dcljr
  • Ilocano (ilo:) might reach 1,000 Happened on Apr 15/16th.- Edroeh (Looks like it happened today, Apr 17th. - dcljr)
  • Cashubian (csb:) might reach 1,000

Since I'm posting this so late in the month, I can already say that my spreadsheet-based methods have missed two additions to the table: Haitian (ht:) and Bengali (bn:) both reached 1,000 articles earlier today after unpredictable growth spurts (Haitian up from 666 articles last month and Bengali up from 582).

Sorry, I haven't been keeping this up to date. I don't know if anyone even noticed. (Does/did anyone actually check this "watching" list to help keep track of the article counts? If not, I'll just completely forget about it. If so, I'll feel guilty... and probably still do nothing about it. <g>) - dcljr (talk) 21:14, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

(time passes)

Okay, the rest of this section is now being replaced with a more "sensitive" analysis based on 6 semi-periodic checks of the article counts spread over the last two months. (I had already collected the data, but hadn't figured out the most efficient way of analyzing it by the time I posted my last message. My previous spreadsheet calculations — see the monthly "Watched" sections elsewhere on this talk page — were too difficult to update month to month, so that's why I let this section linger for so long without updating it. Now I think I might have a way of tracking article counts that takes a minimum of effort on my part. — But enough about me....)

Based on trends in article counts seen at m:List of Wikipedias, the following languages are the ones most likely to need promoting in the table this month (July 2006):

  • Estonian (et:) will reach 20,000 Happened July 22nd. - dcljr (talk)
  • Bosnian (bs:) will reach 10,000 Happened July 15th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Serbo-Croatian (sh:) will reach 5,000 Happened July 22nd. - dcljr (talk)
  • Yiddish (yi:) will reach 2,000 Happened July 25th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Simple English (simple:) might reach 10,000 Happened July 26th then again on 30th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Franco-Provençal/Arpitan (frp:) might reach 2,000
  • Scottish Gaelic (gd:) might reach 2,000 Happened July 13th. - dcljr (talk)

The following are less likely, but possible promotions:

  • Russian (ru:) might possibly reach 100,000
  • Neapolitan (nap:) might possibly reach 20,000
  • Luxembourgish (lb:) might possibly reach 10,000 Happened July 23rd. - dcljr (talk)
  • Vietnamese (vi:) might possibly reach 10,000
  • Haitian (ht:) might possibly reach 5,000
  • Venetian (vec:) might possibly reach 5,000
  • Faroese (fo:) might possibly reach 2,000
  • Ilokano (ilo:) might possibly reach 2,000
  • Javanese (jv:) might possibly reach 2,000 Happened July 25th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Piedmontese (pms:) might possibly reach 2,000
  • Uzbek (uz:) might possibly reach 2,000

And these are the most likely newcomers to the table:

  • Norman (nrm:) will reach 1,000 Happened July 20th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Friulian (fur:) will almost certainly reach 1,000 Happened July 14th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Swahili (sw:) will probably reach 1,000 Happened July 25th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Uyghur (ug:) will probably reach 1,000
  • Armenian (hy:) might possibly reach 1,000 Happened July 14th. - dcljr (talk)
  • Ligurian (lij:) might possibly reach 1,000

Note that within each list above, the entries are given in decreasing order of certainty ("will", "will almost certainly", "will probably", "might", "might possibly"), then in numerical decreasing order by milestone, then finally in alphabetical order.

Finally, a few nitty-gritty details: The given levels of certainty are based on how often in the last 5 checks of article counts (made approximately every 1 or 2 weeks) the wiki grew at a sufficient rate (in articles per day) that, if the rate were continued from now to the end of the month, the wiki would reach its next milestone. If every single time the wiki's articles/day rate was checked it was growing fast enough, then it is said the wiki "will" reach the milestone. If only 4 of the last 5 times showed sufficient growth, then it is said it "almost certainly" will reach it; and so forth. This method is probably slightly biased in favor of saying a wiki will reach the next milestone, but that's better, IMO, than being biased against it. - dcljr (talk) 20:24, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Languages watched in September (and October) 2006

This section was moved from the #Languages in need of watching section above. I didn't do a separate "watching" post for October. - dcljr (talk) 00:16, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Based on trends in article counts seen at m:List of Wikipedias, the following languages are the ones most likely to need promoting in the table this month (September 2006):

  • Latvian (lv:) will reach 5,000 Happened September 7th. - dcljr
  • Italian (it:) will almost certainly reach 200,000 Happened September 27th. - dcljr
  • Belarusian (be:) will almost certainly reach 5,000 Happened September 29th. - dcljr
  • Welsh (cy:) will probably reach 5,000 Happened September 15th. - dcljr
  • Sundanese (su:) will probably reach 2,000 Happened September 18th, then reached 5,000 October 11th. - dcljr

The following are less likely, but possible promotions:

  • Czech (cs:) might possibly reach 50,000
  • Bengali (bn:) might possibly reach 10,000 Happened September 26th. - dcljr
  • Haitian (ht:) might possibly reach 10,000
  • Albanian (sq:) might possibly reach 10,000
  • Uzbek (uz:) might possibly reach 10,000
  • Chuvash (cv:) might possibly reach 5,000
  • Scottish Gaelic (gd:) might possibly reach 5,000
  • Tagalog (tl:) might possibly reach 5,000 Happened October 10th. - dcljr
  • Ilokano (ilo:) might possibly reach 2,000 Happened September 15th. - dcljr

And these are the most likely newcomers to the table:

  • Malayalam (ml:) will almost certainly reach 1,000 Happened September 20th. - dcljr
  • Cantonese (zh-yue:) will almost certainly reach 1,000 Happened September 8th. - dcljr
  • Ladino (lad:) will probably reach 1,000 Happened September 13th. - dcljr
  • Banyumasan (map-bms:) will probably reach 1,000 Happened September 12th. - dcljr
  • Uyghur (ug:) will probably reach 1,000 Happened September 7th. - dcljr
  • Ligurian (lij:) might possibly reach 1,000 Happened October 25th. - dcljr

Note that within each list above, the entries are given in decreasing order of certainty ("will", "will almost certainly", "will probably", "might", "might possibly"), then in decreasing numerical order by milestone, then finally in alphabetical order. Incidentally, my method (see below for details) is definitely biased towards saying a wiki with a recent growth spurt (i.e., bot activity) will continue such activity, even if it hasn't seen any increase at all in the last few weeks. Oh, well. Call it optimism. - dcljr (talk) 09:14, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, the mid-size Wikipedias that have these growth spurts are usually due to a bot importing from 2,000 to 4,000 year stubs. An edition that gains about that many articles in one month, even though its usual gain is in the hundreds of articles, is likely growing for that reason. In any event, I really don't think the Haitian Creole Wikipedia is going to double in size within this month. :^) – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 03:43, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
