Yes, you are quite right. The text I replaced without verifying was "now" with "as of 2004" (apart from the typo). It is arguable that "now" is worse, since it would now be wrong by another year than when I wrote "as of 2004"! For this reason I always replace "now" and "currently" when I see them, usually verifying that the current year was at elast inteded by the original author.
