Milton Ernest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Milton Ernest is a village and civil parish in the Bedford district of Bedfordshire, England, and is about five miles north of Bedford itself. The village is situated on the east bank of the River Great Ouse, and is the site of Milton Ernest Hall, which was used as the US 8th air force's support command headquarters in the Second World War. [1] Band leader Glenn Miller often stayed here - and flew from nearby Twinwoods airfield, where there is a Glenn Miller Museum, in 1945 - never to be seen again.

Milton Ernest's Church (All Saints) was built between the 12th and 15th centuries[2].

Every year, the London End Christmas lights displayed by a house in the village are a visual spectacle drawing in tourists from all over the world to visit. The lights are "just a bit of fun" and are "loved by the kids" according to local sources.

Milton Ernest has a small (60-65 pupils) but very successful village school, closely linked to the church.[3]
